  • Valerie Bertinelli shared a throwback photo of an “exceptionally happy” day in Provincetown in 2009

  • It prompted her to share her tendency to always “look for the glimmer”

  • The celebrity chef shared another reflected post last month when she turned 65

Valerie Bertinelli is feeling optimistic.

On Friday, May 9, the celebrity chef, 65, shared a throwback shot of herself smiling against a scenic backdrop of Cape Cod’s shoreline on a sunny day in 2009.

“Low tides make me exceptionally happy and this low tide in Provincetown was so freaking cool,” she wrote. “I drove out specifically to experience it and it didn’t disappoint.”

The Food Network alum went on to reflect on her positive outlook on life — even during “overwhelming” times.

“Call me a Pollyanna if you like, but if there is one thing about me, I will look for the glimmer and be damn grateful for it,” she wrote. “To me, a glimmer is that satisfying tease of joy that’s already sitting inside us and itching to find its way out, but it’s too often covered up by our brain which struggles with every day challenges and overwhelming feelings that can then pile up when we try to numb them or suffocate them.”

“Sometimes little things get in our way, and sometimes it’s big things, but that glimmer is always there sitting right below the surface,” she went on. “Have a confirmation bias for glimmers. Look for things to be grateful for to spark that inner joy. Gratitude encourages glimmers. Acknowledge those sweet glimmers and thank them every time they show up and they’ll show up more.”

Bertinelli concluded the post, advising readers to “Show up for yourself and the glimmer will too.”

Numerous commenters thanked her for the message, agreeing with its sentiment and praising her “joyous” appearance in the accompanying photo.

The One Day at a Time star previously shared hope for the future in an Instagram Reel marking her 65th birthday on Wednesday, April 23.

“Went through it all 😅 in the last handful of years and I’m so grateful for the downs as much as I am for all of the ups I am blessed to experience,” she wrote in the post’s caption. “The light at the end of the tunnel is finally here. I can see it. I feel it.”

“I love my family,” she continued. “I love my friends. I love all of you out there supporting me and being a part of our community here. I am one lucky and grateful mofo. XOXO 💋♥️”

The video featured a compilation of highlights from the past year of her life, including both selfies and appearances from family and friends such as her son, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Drew Barrymore, whose talk show she frequently joins as a lifestyle expert.

Bertinelli shows off a different side of herself earlier this week in a horror-themed music video from her son’s band, Mammoth WVH.

In the video for “The End,” Wolfgang Van Halen, 34, performs for a club filled with zombies and vampires.

Wolfgang, whose father is late Van Halen frontman Eddie Van Halen, shows off his guitar shredding skills in the video. Bertinelli was married to Eddie from 1981 until 2007. He died from cancer in October 2020.

Bertinelli, who gets in on the action to fight the menacing creatures, shared how much she enjoyed the experience in an Instagram post on May 3.

“A ridiculous amount of fun was had for two days,” she wrote, going on to praise Robert Rodriguez, who directed the video.

“His passion and joy for his craft is truly contagious,” she added. “And thank you, Robert for the lesson on how to throw a punch on camera. 👊🏼 I can’t believe after all these years I’ve never done that. So much f—ing fun!”
