A new Pew survey provides a fascinating glimpse into how adults in the US are thinking about AI these days. The results are far more negative than you might have thought, which highlights a big AI opportunity for Apple.

Survey shows fear and skepticism around AI in the US

Late last week, the Pew Research Center released a new report titled, “How the U.S. Public and AI Experts View Artificial Intelligence.”

Over 5,000 adults participated last August, plus 1,000 AI experts later in the year.

The findings were enlightening.

Overwhelmingly, people working in AI were far more optimistic about the technology than the general population.

But that’s not altogether surprising.

What really surprised me was just how negatively the general public views AI right now.

For example:

  • 43% of responders believe the increased use of AI is likely to harm them
  • 24% think it will benefit them
  • 33% were not sure

Similarly, when asked about the impact of AI on the US over the next 20 years:

  • 35% say it will have a negative impact
  • 17% said positive
  • the rest were either unsure or thought the impact would be equally positive and negative

Ultimately, it seems that far more U.S. adults view AI as a threat rather than something worth celebrating.

And that highlights a unique opportunity for Apple.

Apple’s ‘think different’ AI opportunity

Siri devices

Apple has the brand recognition and trust among users that many other AI players don’t.

Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic can’t match the years of user trust Apple has built. Microsoft and Google fare better, but they also don’t carry Apple’s solid reputation for user privacy.

In its favor, Apple also has a history of making technology truly useful in people’s lives, not just building tech for tech’s sake.

I suspect most AI concerns involve a few main things: job replacement, privacy, and fear of the unknown.

While there’s not much Apple can do about AI’s ability to shake up the job market, it does have a lot to offer in the other departments.

Ensuring that AI isn’t constantly harvesting user data could alleviate one concern. And building user-friendly UIs for AI features would go a long way toward improving the other.

Undoubtedly, Apple has some big disadvantages in the current AI race, as have been well documented.

But it also has an opportunity to build AI features that:

  • truly enhance users’ lives
  • are easy to use and accessible
  • and that cultivate creativity, not replace it

Will that be easy? Not in the slightest. But there’s clearly a need for an AI company to “think different.”

What do you think of the Pew report on AI concerns? How can Apple help? Let us know in the comments.
