Unearthed: How King Charles and Cate Blanchett Are Seeding a Royal Environmental Legacy Through Podcasts

King Charles III has joined forces with Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett for a new podcast, “Unearthed,” delving into critical environmental concerns and spotlighting the invaluable work of the Millennium Seed Bank. This marks another significant step in the Royal Family’s deep-rooted commitment to planetary preservation, a mission shared across generations and supported by prominent advocates like Blanchett.

The British Royal Family has long been at the forefront of environmental advocacy, and a recent development sees King Charles III taking his passion to the airwaves. In an exciting collaboration, His Majesty has recorded a podcast interview with acclaimed actress Cate Blanchett, focusing on urgent ecological challenges and the vital role of seed preservation.

The podcast, titled “Unearthed,” is a production of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, which oversees the world-renowned Millennium Seed Bank in Wakehurst, Sussex. This initiative is celebrating its 25th anniversary, dedicated to safeguarding plant species from the devastating impacts of climate change and other environmental pressures.

A Deep Dive into “Unearthed” and the Millennium Seed Bank

During the 22-minute conversation recorded at Windsor Castle in July 2025, King Charles, 76, and Cate Blanchett, 56, explored the profound importance of biodiversity. Blanchett, an ambassador for Wakehurst, highlighted the urgency of the seed bank’s mission, stating, “The future of life on Earth may very well depend on the seeds stored within this bank.”

Joined by Dr. Elinor Breman, Kew’s senior research leader in seed conservation, the discussion brought to light alarming statistics, such as the 97% decimation of wildflower meadows. King Charles reflected on his own project, the Coronation Meadows, initiated to commemorate his late mother, Queen Elizabeth.

He emphasized the incredible speed of environmental destruction compared to the time it takes for recovery. “What you can destroy in one day by just ploughing it up takes practically a hundred years to replace,” he explained, stressing the need for constant, dedicated management. His travels to Transylvania, Romania, where meadows still boast remarkable diversity including 17 or 18 different species of orchid, serve as a poignant reminder of what once was and what can still be preserved.

The Interconnectedness of Nature and Industry

The conversation also touched upon the pharmaceutical industry’s responsibility in preserving plant health, given that countless drugs and medicines are derived from botanical sources. King Charles suggested it was “surely their interest to invest in the protection and enhancement and restoration of this biodiversity,” from which so many treatments have been derived.

Blanchett echoed a frustration shared by many environmentalists: the gap between extraordinary initiatives and the funding needed to scale them up. She noted, “There’s a willingness there, but there’s just, there’s not the direction of the funds.” King Charles added to this, highlighting “that lack of awareness too, as you were saying about the actual detail of all these things.”

Cate Blanchett: A Consistent Advocate for Royal Environmental Initiatives

This podcast appearance with King Charles marks Blanchett’s second podcast engagement focused on royal environmental efforts. She previously appeared on a podcast with then-Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, discussing his pioneering plans to save the planet. During that conversation, William shared personal anecdotes of growing up, spending hours “climbing trees, digging ditches and all sorts of things,” highlighting the childhood inspirations behind his passion for conservation. He also credited Sir David Attenborough for showing him “a wider world to explore” when he was younger, as reported by Hello! Magazine.

Blanchett’s consistent involvement underscores her deep commitment to these causes. She has been a strong supporter of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize since its inception, an initiative dedicated to finding and funding solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Her participation across generations of royal environmental endeavors highlights a powerful alignment of purpose, lending significant celebrity weight to these crucial campaigns.

The Royal Family’s Enduring Green Mandate

This “Unearthed” podcast is King Charles’s second podcast appearance this year, following an earlier collaboration with Apple Music in March where he shared some of his favorite songs. His willingness to engage with modern media platforms like podcasts demonstrates a strategic effort to reach a wider audience and amplify urgent messages about sustainability.

The Royal Family’s commitment to the environment is a hallmark of their public service. From King Charles’s decades-long advocacy for organic farming and sustainable practices to Prince William’s ambitious Earthshot Prize, the monarchy consistently champions conservation. Cate Blanchett’s involvement across these initiatives signifies a powerful partnership between global celebrity influence and long-standing royal dedication, reinforcing the message that environmental stewardship is a universal imperative.

As fans of influential voices and impactful storytelling, we appreciate the depth and clarity these podcasts bring to critical issues. The insights shared by King Charles, Cate Blanchett, and Dr. Breman through “Unearthed” serve as a crucial resource, inspiring greater awareness and action for the planet’s future, as highlighted by People.
