  • Tyla wore Jacquemus and Pandora for her return to the Met Gala

  • The “Water” singer made her Met Gala debut in 2024, where she wore a custom Balmain sand dress

  • Tyla was styled by Law Roach, who also styled Zendaya and Nicki Minaj for the night

One year after her headline-making Met Gala debut, Tyla returned to the event in style.

At the 2025 Met Gala, the “Water” singer, 23, quickly became one of the most talked-about looks at the night yet again as her big moment featured everything from a sexy hair reveal to a diamond-clad ensemble inspired by the late André Leon Talley.

Styled by Law Roach — who also outfitted Zendaya and Nicki Minaj for the night — Tyla made a showstopping entrance in Jacquemus in a pinstripe gown with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a fitted bodice. The real breathtaking moment was the coordinating jacket which had a train so long it covered flights of steps as Tyla made her way inside.

The Grammy winner also shined bright in custom Pandora (she was named a brand ambassador in April). Her array of menswear-inspired jewelry boasted 30-carats worth of lab-grown diamonds on custom pieces, one of which was designed with Pandora’s ME chain and Talisman collection 6-carat heart pendant featuring a bespoke diamond-set monocle with a honed magnifying lens.

Tyla’s hair was transformed into a glam honey blonde pixie cut styled with voluminous waves while her makeup was done by Pat McGrath Labs.

“For Tyla’s makeup, we were channeling vintage Hollywood glamour — icons like Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge and Jean Harlow — with a modern twist. The look focused on sultry smokey eyes using warm nudes and deep browns,” shared makeup artist Pat McGrath in a press release.

In October 2024, Vogue revealed the 2025 Met Gala would take place May 5 with Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour as co-chairs, with LeBron James as honorary chair.

The star-studded event, held the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, will fundraise for The Costume Institute — and put the spotlight on its spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”

According to Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton, the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”

Through a curation of garments, paintings, photographs and more from the 18th century through to the present day, the exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.

In February, the dress code was revealed to be “Tailored for You.” Fittingly, it is a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. The show also revealed a star-studded host committee: Simone Biles and her husband Jonathan Owens, as well as Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Angel Reese and Usher.

Tyla had a tough act to follow at this year’s event: herself. Last May, the star made her first-ever Met Gala appearance, which quickly became one of the most memorable debuts in the history of the event.

For the 2024 “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion”-themed gala — the dress code was “The Garden of Time,” inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name — the singer wore a form-fitting Balmain sand dress.

Comprising a plaster body mold and organza train covered in three shades of sand mixed with crystal studs and fittingly paired with an hourglass clutch, the look was inspired by “the sands of time,” Tyla said on the red carpet.

Speaking with La La Anthony during Vogue‘s official red carpet livestream, the singer said she and her creative team “wanted something out of the box this year.”

“I just love the outfit,” the star added, “and how everything turned out.”

The headline-making sand gown did, however, come with one major challenge. It proved very difficult to walk in, and the singer had to be lifted up parts of the staircase.

She was later freed of the form-fitting, sculptural gown when, after snapping her red carpet pics, she was cut out of the custom Balmain piece.

Before the singer headed inside for the actual party, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing and his team literally turned her gown into a mini with just a pair of scissors, unveiling Tyla’s second — unofficial — Met Gala look.

Tyla’s second Met Gala appearance not only comes in the wake of her iconic debut, but also follows shortly after the star made fashion headlines for a totally different look — and her reaction to it.

Last month, the singer made her Coachella debut, and took the Indio, Calif., stage in an ensemble that evoked one of Britney Spears’ most well-known looks: her 2001 MTV VMAs ensemble.

The “Jump” musician performed at the festival in a green bra, micro shorts and a body chain, quickly drawing comparisons to the outfit Spears, 43, wore for her iconic performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U.” (Tyla did not, however, accessorize with a live python as Spears did.)

Shortly after, the “Water” musician denied that she took inspiration from the pop star, however. Replying to a (since-deleted) post on X asserting that she drew inspiration from Spears, she wrote, “Love her but I just thought the outfit was fly … no inspo.”

And, after another X user jumped in to add, “I personally think she is a copycat and too full of herself,” Tyla then fired back with, “Personally I think you should stfu.”
