As Diana Ross once sang, “It’s more than you, it’s more than me / No matter what we are, we are a family.”
Family is clearly important to the legendary singer, so much so that she gave a shoutout to her five children, as well as her eight grandchildren, with a secret detail on her sprawling Met Gala ensemble.
On the first Monday in May, Ross brought one of the standout looks of the evening, designed by Ugo Mozie with the help of Ross and her son, Evan. The outfit consisted of a silver, jewel-covered gown paired with a feathery white hat that floated over Ross’s head like a halo.
However, the pièce de résistance was Ross’s feathery white shawl, which trailed behind her, engulfing the Met steps with its 18-foot train.
As revealed by the “I’m Coming Out” singer on Instagram, it turns out that the secret nod to her family was featured on the underside of this shawl. “The names of my children & grandchildren, the most important people to me, were embroidered in my 18-foot train so I felt like I brought all of them with me,” Ross wrote. “What a beautiful night.”

The musical icon is a mother to five, including Rhonda, Tracee, and Chudney, who she shares with Robert Ellis Silberstein, as well as Ross and Evan, who she welcomed with her late ex-husband, Arne Næss Jr.
Ahead of Met night, Ross posed for a special photo (as seen here) with all of her kids while also sitting for a rare portrait with all eight of her grandchildren: Bronx, Callaway, Everlee, Indigo, Jagger, Leif, Raif, and Ziggy. In both of the photos, the family members all matched in glowing white, but the centerpiece was that personalized conversation-starting shawl.
