Tulane men’s basketball player Gregg Glenn III died at age 22 after what is being described as a “tragic accident.”

A statement from the university’s vice president of student affairs Sarah Cunningham issued on Monday, July 28, said, “It is with profound sadness that I reach out to you today. We have lost a cherished member of our university community, Gregg Glenn III, who died in a tragic accident this weekend.”

Cunningham described Glenn as a “talented student-athlete who enriched our lives with his spirit, dedication, and passion for both sports and academics,” calling him an “outstanding athlete” on the men’s basketball team and “an individual who brought joy and light to those around him.”

Additional details about Glenn’s cause of death were not made available.

The college basketball player posted on Instagram Stories just hours before his death. At the time Tulane confirmed his passing, Glenn’s Stories were still active on his profile — both were reposts of other people’s posts, including one from the Utah Jazz’s Taylor Hendricks.

Tulane Green Wave’s head coach Ron Hunter said in a statement that his program “was devastated” to learn of Glenn’s death. “He was not only an exceptional athlete but also a remarkable person who brought energy, dedication, and kindness to our team and community. Gregg’s spirit and passion will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will honor his memory by continuing to celebrate the impact he made on all of us.”

Tulane’s director of broadcasting Corey Gloor said he is “absolutely gutted” by the loss. “Gregg was such a great, genuine and kind person. Love ya, G,” he added.

Glenn started in 34 games for Tulane last season, averaging 10.6 points per game.
