President Trump on Wednesday derided progressive Zohran Mamdani as a “communist lunatic” after Mamdani was poised to win the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City.

Trump offered his first comments on the New York City mayoral primary, which took place on Tuesday and saw Mamdani, a 33-year-old New York State Assembly member, on track to secure the Democratic nomination.

“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor,” Trump, a longtime New York City resident, posted on Truth Social. “We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous.”

Trump mocked Mamdani’s appearance and voice and criticized him for having the support of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and others.

In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump suggested the emergence of Mamdani, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) and others as prominent Democrats meant the country was “really SCREWED!”

While a winner in the New York City mayoral primary hasn’t been officially declared due to the city’s ranked-choice ballot system, Mamdani had a substantial lead after the first round of votes was tabulated.

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who was running in second place behind Mamdani, conceded on Tuesday night.

Mamdani will face New York City Mayor Eric Adams in the general election in November. Adams, who was embroiled in a corruption case that was ultimately dropped earlier this year, will be running as an independent in the general election.
