President Trump on Friday will hold a rally in Pennsylvania to celebrate the partnership between U.S. Steel and Japanese corporation Nippon Steel that Trump has touted as a boost to U.S. jobs.
The president will travel to Allegany County to visit U.S. Steel Corporation’s Irvin Works plant outside of Pittsburgh for a rally at 5 p.m.
Trump won Pennsylvania in November with more than 50 percent of the vote, defeating former Vice President Kamala Harris in the critical battleground state. He had lost Pennsylvania to former President Biden in 2020 after winning it in 2016.
Last week, Trump announced the new partnership between U.S. Steel and Nippon on social media, saying it “will create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy.”
U.S. Steel lauded the partnership in a statement to The Hill, stating the company will “remain American” and “grow bigger and stronger” in collaboration with Nippon.
“President Trump is a bold leader and businessman who knows how to get the best deal for America, American workers and American manufacturing,” the statement reads. “U. S. Steel greatly appreciates President Trump’s leadership and personal attention to the futures of thousands of steelworkers and our iconic company.”
Bloomberg News reported that Trump, just before announcing the partnership, had received the recommendation from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which he ordered last month to conduct a review of the acquisition of U.S. Steel for help “in determining whether further action in this matter may be appropriate.”
Trump had previously vowed in December to block Nippon Steel’s acquisition. And, earlier this year, Biden announced he was going to stop the sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel in the wake of a yearlong review of the possible acquisition.
