Beyond Alaska: The Full Story of Trump, Putin, and the Vanishing Ukraine Peace Deal Momentum
SHARE

The highly anticipated second summit between President Trump and President Putin, aimed at forging a Ukraine peace deal, has been indefinitely postponed, signifying a profound diplomatic setback and highlighting the deep-seated obstacles to ending the three-and-a-half-year war.

The diplomatic push to resolve the protracted conflict in Ukraine has reached a critical juncture, as hopes for a second high-stakes summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have officially stalled. This development follows a period of intense, yet ultimately unfruitful, negotiations and increasing tensions, casting a long shadow over prospects for a swift end to the war.

Initially, President Trump had expressed confidence in brokering a deal, even presenting himself as a neutral mediator. However, as the conflict dragged on, his frustration with Putin’s apparent reluctance to compromise grew, with Trump stating he was “very disappointed” with the Russian leader last month, as reported by CNN.

The Echoes of Anchorage: Momentum Lost

The first significant attempt at a high-level resolution occurred in August 2025, when President Trump and President Putin met at an air base in Anchorage, Alaska. Despite the high expectations, the summit concluded without any concrete peace agreement to end the fighting that began with Russia’s full-scale offensive in February 2022. Diplomatic efforts subsequently faltered, marked by continued deadly strikes from both sides and Russian advances on the battlefield.

Weeks after the Alaska meeting, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov candidly admitted that the “powerful momentum generated by Anchorage in favour of agreements . . . has largely gone,” according to AFP news agencies. Ryabkov placed the blame squarely on European nations, accusing them of seeking to wage a “war to the last Ukrainian.”

The Budapest Proposal and its Collapse

Despite the initial setback, a new glimmer of hope emerged in mid-October. Following a “productive” two-hour phone call between the two leaders on October 16, President Trump announced plans for a second Ukraine war summit with President Putin, specifying Budapest as the proposed location. This announcement, made on social media, came just before a White House visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was lobbying for increased military support.

However, this renewed diplomatic initiative proved short-lived. By October 21, just days after Trump’s announcement, an administration official told CNN there were “no plans” for a summit between the two “in the immediate future.” The planned groundwork meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, also stalled. While the US initially described their October 20 phone call as “productive,” sources familiar with the discussions indicated that Russia’s position had not evolved significantly, remaining rooted in a maximalist stance that precluded further progress.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was quick to downplay the delay, stating on October 21 that the summit “cannot be postponed, because no date was ever set.” This response underscored the deep chasm in expectations and political will between the two sides.

The Shadow of Tomahawk Missiles

A significant point of contention, and a potential catalyst for escalating tensions, has been the discussion around supplying Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles. US Vice President JD Vance had previously mentioned that Washington was considering sending these missiles to Kyiv.

President Putin unequivocally warned that such a move would signify a “whole new level of escalation,” a sentiment echoed by Ryabkov, who cautioned that it would have “severe” consequences and urged Washington to reconsider. Zelensky, for his part, has consistently argued that long-range capabilities are “the indispensable key to peace,” believing they would compel Moscow to take negotiations more seriously. The stalling of the summit was directly linked by Zelensky to the US declining to provide these missiles, at least for now, suggesting Russia’s interest in diplomacy waned as Ukraine’s long-range capabilities remained uncertain.

The Ongoing Conflict and Its Human Cost

While diplomatic efforts falter, the war on the ground continues to exact a heavy toll. Recent reports highlight the relentless nature of the conflict:

  • In Russia’s Belgorod region, a missile strike killed three people in Maslova Pristan, hitting a sports hall, according to local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.
  • A Russian strike on the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson killed two elderly people, local officials confirmed.
  • Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched at least 183 drones at Ukrainian territory between late Tuesday and early Wednesday, targeting essential infrastructure.
  • Moscow’s defense ministry claimed to have intercepted 53 Ukrainian drones overnight, primarily over the frequently targeted Belgorod region.

The war, now nearing its fourth year, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and forced millions of Ukrainians from their homes. Russia continues to occupy approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, much of it devastated by the ongoing fighting.

What This Means for the Future

The latest diplomatic deadlock between President Trump and President Putin signals a difficult road ahead for peace in Ukraine. Without high-level engagement and a willingness from both sides to compromise, the conflict risks becoming further entrenched. The debate over advanced weaponry, particularly long-range missiles, remains a volatile factor that could either incentivize negotiations or trigger further escalation.

As onlytrustedinfo.com continues to monitor these developments, it is clear that the path to peace is anything but straightforward. The intricate dance of diplomacy, military aid, and on-the-ground realities will shape the future of Ukraine and the broader international landscape.
