(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump took to social media to urge congressional Republicans to “work as fast as they can” to send the massive budget reconciliation bill to his desk by July 4.
This four-week deadline is a tall order, especially because the Republicans are facing significant internal divisions over the contents of the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill.’
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the funding bill “a historic opportunity to turn our country around after four disastrous years under Joe Biden.”
The president reiterated the contents of the bill, including ending tax on tips and overtime, repealing Biden-era electric vehicle mandates and expediting deportation efforts. He also called on his party to “take a massive step to balancing our budget.”
The ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ is a crucial procedural step for Trump to carry out much of his legislative agenda. Without Congress’ signature, Trump will face major setbacks in delivering on his immigration and tax promises.
A recent House-backed version of the bill only narrowly passed through the chamber due to its historically slim Republican majority. The same will be the case for the Senate version as Majority Leader Sen. John Thune, R-S.C., can only afford to lose three GOP votes on the bill.
Party loyalty pushed many holdouts in the House to budge and ultimately pass the bill over to the Senate. However, current Senate holdouts like Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Rand Paul, R-Ky., are openly defying loyalty to Trump as they refuse to budge on their demands for the bill.
In order to clear the Senate, the funding bill must pass votes in a handful of committees before a chamber-wide vote on the floor. The Senate version of the bill will then be passed to the House for approval.
