Americans’ satisfaction with President Donald Trump’s second go in the Oval Office has generally dwindled since being inaugurated.

A stream of polls released this week coinciding with his first 100 days shows approval of the second-term president’s performance reaching historic lows not seen by any other president in recent decades.

In an average of recent polling published by the polling data arm of RealClearPolitics, Trump’s approval rating has hovered around 45% in late April and into the beginning of May.

Trump’s recent approval numbers in the low- to mid-40s are notable deviations from most presidents’ first 100 days. Stretching back to 1953, the only other president to amass such paltry approval ratings is Trump himself, in his first term, when his April 2017 favorability dipped to 41%, according to Gallup data.

Here’s what some of the most recent polls released this week say about Americans’ perception of the president’s job performance.

Latest polls on Trump’s approval rating

While President Donald Trump celebrated his first 100 days at a jubilant Michigan rally April 29, the latest polling data generally painted a different picture, with multiple surveys pinning his approval rating in the low- to mid-40s.

A few other polls released the week of April 20-26 offered even lower numbers. Polls released by CNN and The Economist/YouGov the week before gave the president a 41% approval rating. Trump’s approval rating was lowest in an April 25 poll from The Washington Post, ABC News and Ipsos, giving him a 39% favorability rating. That’s down six percentage points from a similar survey released mid-February.

NPR/PBS/Marist poll

  • 42% approve

  • 53% disapprove

When asked to grade the president’s performance in office so far, nearly half of respondents gave the Republican a failing grade, while 23% gave him an A.

The survey of national adults was conducted April 21-23 with a margin of error of ±3.3 percentage points.

Economist/YouGov poll

  • 42% approve

  • 52% disapprove

Discontent over the economy is a common throughline in recent polling, making it one of the most consequential issues affecting Trump’s favorability. In the Economist/YouGov poll conducted April 25-28, 41% approve and 51% disapprove.

The poll was conducted April 25-28 with a margin of error of ±3.2 percentage points.

Emerson College poll

  • 45% approve

  • 45% disapprove

Another 10% of respondents described themselves as neutral. The president’s approval numbers decreased by two points since Emerson College conducted a similar survey marking Trump’s first 50 days in office, while those who disapproved did not change.

Nearly half of respondents say Trump’s economic policy is making the economy worse, while 29% think the administration’s policies are making it better. Another 23% think his policies either have no effect or believe it is too soon to tell. Overall, 37% approve of Trump’s handling of the U.S. economy, while 49% disapprove.

The poll was conducted April 25-28 with a margin of error of ±3 percentage points.

Reuters/Ipsos poll

  • 42% approve

  • 53% disapprove

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released April 30 rounded out the month with a continuation of numbers seen in their survey conducted a week prior.

Discontent over the economy, immigration and trade wars largely fueled respondents’ low favorability, Approval of Trump’s economic stewardship stands at 36%, the lowest level he’s had through both terms so far, according to Reuters, a one-point drop from the outlet’s last poll April 16-21.

Meanwhile, approval of the president’s stance on immigration between the two surveys remains at 45%, though disapproval increased two points from last week’s 46% to this week’s 48%.

The most recent poll was conducted April 25-27 with a margin of error of about 3 percentage points.
