The White House said Sunday that it will not require health insurance companies to provide coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF), two people with knowledge of internal discussions told The Washington Post.

In 2024,Trump promised to expand access to IVF after an Alabama court ruling earlier this year sparked bipartisan concern about the future of fertility treatments. The Alabama Supreme Court had ruled that the state will consider frozen embryos as “children.” (RELATED: Medical Professionals, Republicans Face New Challenges Following Red State Supreme Court’s Embryo Ruling)

In February, Trump signed an executive order directing agencies to reduce IVF costs and boost access. The executive order never promised a coverage mandate but instead focused on affordability and innovation. White House officials now say a mandate forcing insurers to cover IVF would require congressional action and is not currently being pursued.

The Trump administration has repeatedly said it supports IVF access — just not by way of top-down federal requirements.
