  • Tom Cruise was spotted standing on the roof of the BFI IMAX building in London, wearing just a suit, on May 11

  • The actor is currently promoting his latest movie Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning

  • Fans commented about the stunt on social media, with one jokingly asking, “What is he doing?”

Tom Cruise is set to receive an award in London for his work in film this weekend — and in true Mission: Impossible fashion, he celebrated the occasion with a stunt that left fans in awe.

In video footage obtained by Discussing Film, the 62-year-old actor could be seen standing on the roof of the BFI IMAX building in London — one of the largest cinemas in the United Kingdom — on Sunday, May 11. Deadline confirmed from sources close to the star that the man standing on the roof was indeed Cruise.

The clip shows the actor wearing a suit as he looked around the city, seemingly dozens of feet up in the air. The theater was completely wrapped in advertisements for his upcoming — and possibly final installment of — the Mission: Impossible franchise: The Final Reckoning.

Fans quickly flocked to social media to share their amazement (and confusion) at the jaw-dropping stunt, with one asking simply, “What is he doing?”

In one video, taken by an X user and posted online on Sunday evening, an onlooker could be heard joking: “He’s just having a bit of diva time on top of the BMI IMAX.”

According to the movie theater’s website, it boasts the largest screen in all of the U.K. at around 65 feet tall and 85 feet wide.

Other fans who snapped photos of the stunt had similar thoughts, with one writing: “Looked out the window on my uni study break — Why is Tom Cruise on top of the BFI?”

Footage from the same user showed Cruise giving fans down on the ground below a “cheeky wave.”

Cruise is currently in full swing promoting the new installment of Mission: Impossible, and plans to attend the Cannes Film Festival in France to debut the film next week.

Starting with 1996’s original adaptation of the 1960s spy series, Cruise has upped the ante in each successive appearance as Ethan Hunt, a high-flying, butt-kicking and fast-running agent for the Impossible Mission Force. He is now gearing up for his eighth and seemingly last installment, The Final Reckoning, in theaters on May 23.

Earlier this week, Cruise and his longtime Mission: Impossible costar Simon Pegg opened up for PEOPLE’s special edition about some of the most nerve-wracking stunts the star has ever attempted — some so intense that Pegg called him “absolutely nuts.”

Recalling a specific stunt — filming the sequence in 2011’s Ghost Protocol, in which Cruise scales the outside of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building — Pegg, 55, recalled “just leaning out of the window and seeing Tom sort of hanging there, smiling, this big s— eating grin on his face, like, ‘I’m having the best time.’ “

Another stunt that was, as Pegg put it, more on the “interesting” side was the opening scene of 2015’s Rogue Nation, in which Cruise grips the outside of a military plane as it takes off.

“That was the first time I’d seen him nervous,” Pegg told PEOPLE. “There were a lot of variables involved in that stunt … a lot of things that could have gone wrong. Everything is managed to the micro detail. You know, the stunt team is amazing. Tom is obviously incredibly dedicated to making sure he’s ready.”

Cruise, who exposed himself to potentially dangerous flying debris during that particular stunt, told PEOPLE that when the plane taxied down the runway, his thought was, “Oh, maybe this wasn’t such a good idea.”

“I said, ‘But it’s too late. We’re committed. We’re shooting. The crew’s in there,’ ” he recalled. “When we looked at the shot, I was like, ‘Oh, it really works in the story.’ “

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in theaters May 23.
