Todd Chrisley is fully aware of the criticism.
The reality star spoke with PEOPLE exclusively alongside his wife, Julie Chrisley, and daughter Savannah Chrisley, to promote The Chrisleys: Back to Reality. However, the conversation turned toward discussing the aftermath of Todd and Julie returning home from prison, where they were serving a years-long sentence for fraud and tax evasion.
Specifically, they addressed Todd’s negative comments surrounding Julie’s post-prison hair. “I caught a lot of flak for saying that I didn’t like it,” he says, noting that “a lot of people did” like her new look.

Todd, 57, and Julie, 52, returned home on May 28 following a pardon from President Donald Trump, and the Chrisley family matriarch was donning her natural brown hair. But Todd’s response to her new look, which has since been reverted to her signature blonde hairdo, was not received well by the public.
“I’m just trying to be honest. I’m not gonna lie, I first saw you, when I got out of that car, I started thinking about going back [to prison]. But then I thought, let me embrace this,” he said on the July 23 episode of the Chrisley Confessions 2.0 podcast. “I mean, it was a rough moment. It was a rough moment because I’d never seen you dark in my life. Julie, 30 years, I’ve never seen you with dark hair.”
At the time, Todd’s remarks were even criticized by Julie, who noted that it “wasn’t very nice” that he told her she “set the bar low” and “had to go nowhere but up.”
Julie, however, tells PEOPLE that she “absolutely” planned to re-dye her hair blonde post-prison.
“[My stylist Tyler Bishop] was waiting and ready for me,” she shares. “So I kind of always knew that I was going to go back.”
But according to Todd, “it was a process” getting her hair back to blonde. “Literally took up shop in our kitchen,” he adds.

Fans of the couple will get to see Todd and Julie’s emotional reunion on their new Lifetime series, The Chrisleys: Back to Reality. The moment, featured in the trailer, saw Todd commenting on Julie’s hair change, saying, “I never thought I’d be with a dark-headed woman. But I’m willing to try it tonight.”
