NEED TO KNOW

  • Two of the writers for The Office are remembering some of the “best acting” from the show

  • In the latest episode of the Office Ladies podcast, writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg detailed the season 2 episode, “The Secret”

  • The episode revolves around Jim trying to ensure that no one in the office finds out about his crush on Pam

Two of the writers from The Office are sharing their memories from one particularly poignant episode, in which Jim (played by John Krasinski) tells Pam (played by Jenna Fischer) that he’s moved on from his crush on her.

On the most recent episode of their Office Ladies podcast, Fischer and co-host Angela Kinsey interviewed writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who co-wrote the season 2 episode, “The Secret.”

The episode revolves around Jim trying to ensure that no one in the office finds out about his crush on Pam, even though he already told boss Michael Scott (Steve Carell).

In one scene, he and Pam meet in the office kitchen, where he tries to downplay the feelings he confessed to earlier.

“Can I say I remember this so well?” Eisenberg said. “So in ‘The Secret,’ there’s a scene with you and John in the kitchen. And he says, ‘I told I told Michael that I had a crush on you, but I don’t anymore.’ And you say, ‘So you’re going to be weird around me now?’ And you did this thing with your eyebrows.”

Eisenberg continued: “It was a micro-act. And I remember when we shot it … I was like, ‘That’s the best acting I’d ever seen.’ Like, literally, it was incredible. It was so small, it was so subtle and I felt so much from it. At that point, I guess we had learned a little bit of subtext [about Jim’s true feelings] and just the scene of, like, how much was unspoken between the two of you and what I was feeling from what you’re emoting with just with your eyes, it took my breath away … I was blown away by your acting.”

The will-they-or-won’t-they nature of Pam and Jim’s relationship was pivotal to the popularity and success of The Office. By the end of the series, the couple has two children and gets married during the NBC sitcom’s sixth season in a two-part episode titled “Niagara.”
