The Gist
Hair color trends from 2016 are returning with fresh, ultra-flattering updates.
The updated 2016 styles use softer techniques and more natural finishes.
The new wave emphasizes dimension and tone for a natural effect.
Ready to feel old? It’s been almost a decade since 2016, when Lemonade was on repeat, everyone was hunting Pokémon on their phones, and hair color was dominated by brondes, cherry cola reds, and unblended ombrés, which were making the rounds. Everything that goes up must come down, and in beauty, that means every era eventually comes full circle. Right now, 2016 hair colors are experiencing a major comeback.
“Hair trends always recycle, and just like fashion, we’re seeing a big wave of nostalgia right now,” says celebrity colorist Larisa Love. “The 2016 hair color era was all about rich dimensional tones that felt luxe yet effortless, and today clients want that same mix of glamour and wearability.”
Part of the return is thanks to fashion’s own love affair with the past. “All trends come back around, and with Y2K and ’90s being so huge in fashion right now, it makes sense the rest of the beauty trends will follow… including hair,” Love adds. However, if you’re shuddering at the thought of reliving that era once again, don’t worry—these shades are being reimagined with today’s artistry and techniques. What was once a bold, almost dramatic hair moment is now softened, with more dimension and depth, which makes the color look lived-in.
Jacob Schwartz, Schwarzkopf Professional U.S. Hair Color Trend Ambassador, says the key to making the 2016 revival feel fresh is subtlety. “Back then, color was much more dramatic, think chunky highlights and bright copper tones,” he explains. “Now I’m seeing similar color shifts with more refinement, like tonal soft color and strategically placed highlights and lowlights.”

There is something so alluring about a jet black, bold hair color, and Charli XCX’s party girl edge is largely in part to her dramatic strands.

This season, hairstylists are seeing red, with requests for this color en masse. Although the hue itself isn’t new, the contrast of a shade with warm, natural undertones sets the vibe for a modern twist.

Bronde

It’s not too blonde, it’s not too brown—this color is just right. This dimensional shade gives the illusion of your natural hair color rather than a freshly dyed ‘do.

The key to achieving a blonde hue that isn’t too striking is to find balance in an undertone that is soft and multi-dimensional. Instead of one in-your-face bright shade, this gives the appearance of a more lived-in approach.

Perhaps I’m biased, but I’d say that brunettes have way more fun. This casual, nonfussy hue, as displayed on Margaret Qualley, is the definition of cool-girl strands that still look lovely.

Sure, you can go for a regular brunette, but if you want a look with a grungier vibe, why not add a touch of red undertones like Jenna Ortega?

Perhaps no one has had more of an impact on the platinum revival than Miss Sabrina Carpenter. Her freshly bleached tones make an impact and aren’t overly fussy.
