Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga has been a saga behind the scenes as well as on the screen. The film series—Costner originally envisioned it as a four-part Western epic—saw the release of Chapter One, now streaming, last June, with plans for the second installment to debut later that summer. However, the film underwent an eleventh-hour change of plans.
In early July 2024, Costner’s production company Territory Pictures and Horizon‘s distribution partner New Line Cinema announced that they were pulling Chapter 2 from its August debut date. At the time, the move was reportedly aimed at growing the audience for the saga via streaming and on-demand viewing in advance of the second film.
Since then, though, no further announcements have been made about the potential release of completed film, which debuted out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival last September, following a screening of the first film.
Though actor Isabelle Fuhrman, who stars in the film alongside Costner himself, Sienna Miller, and Luke Wilson, and many others, had previously indicated that the film might be hitting theaters in the near future, it now seems that things might be more bleak for the film’s prospects.
“I believe it’s coming pretty soon,” she told Screen Rant in January 2025. “I think they’re kind of massaging what’s going on with it, but I actually, as of now, haven’t heard anything.” She added, “Actors are usually the last to know in these sorts of things.”
However, by May 2025, she told the same publication, “I really hope that we get to see the second one. I have no clue what Kevin’s planning, but he’s probably planning something. And, yeah, no, I’m a really big fan of the second film. I think it really captures so much more of the women of that time period, and what was kind of going on for them, more so than the first one, which I feel like sets up this whole world. I really hope that people will see the second one when it comes out, and it gives us the opportunity to make the third one. But, right now, I’m starting another project, and I’m just hoping that I get that call from Kevin sometime soon.”
At the Venice Film Festival where Chapter 2 made its world premiere, Costner made it clear that despite delays and a lackluster box office performance for the first outing, he has no plans to cut the Horizon story short. “I don’t know how I’m going to make ‘Three’ right now,” the actor, who personally financed the first two films, told reporters, “But I’m going to make it.” He added, “I have to hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill. I’ve gotta go put my hands on it again and start to push it up. It’s a rope that I cannot let go of.”
So far, no dates have been announced as to when Chapter 2 will debut worldwide or in what format—in theaters or direct-to-streaming.
Per the official description, Horizon “explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.”
