In a recent interview, country star Lainey Wilson spilled on the song she had to “fight for” to get recorded the way she envisioned. That song was “Somewhere Over Laredo.”
“All these songs are my babies, but I’ve worked really hard on this song,” she said in an interview as part of Amazon Music’s Behind the Song. “We were in a studio with this one specifically—we had to record it several different times to get it to where we thought it needed to be. Sometimes you just have to fight for the best idea. You have to fight for what you think is the vision for the song. I’m glad that we fought for this.”

Wilson also spoke about the song’s nod to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and The Wizard of Oz, how it mentions black birds and mirrors the 1939 song’s sound in the bridge. Her intention with the song was to create something nostalgic that “takes people back.” Based on the fan reaction thus far, the “Watermelon Moonshine” singer feels she’s been successful.
“I think this song is just really getting started,” she added. “I think this song is gonna live many lives.”
