Billie Eilish skipped the 2024 Met Gala and chose to take this year off, too. She has a very good reason though: Eilish is currently on tour in Europe.

Eilish just played shows at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome on May 4 and 5. She’ll play again on May 7, making it very hard for her to fly to New York City, attend the fashion event, then head immediately back to the Netherlands before her next concert.

Eilish made her Met Gala debut in 2021 when she served as a co-chair. She wore a nude Oscar de la Renta gown with her then-platinum hair.

Last month, Eilish spoke to British Vogue about her artistry and image. “I had no idea [when I was younger] that I was doing anything fearlessly,” she began. “When I would hear people comment that I was only 16 and not fitting in with the stereotype—that I was a rebel or whatever—I remember being really confused because I didn’t see it that way. I just felt like I was doing what I thought was cool. I was not intentionally trying to break any mold or rules or change music. I kind of just stayed true to what I liked and what I wanted.

“But, the older I get, there really have been many periods of doubt and fear and feeling so much pressure, and then when more people knew me, more people had something to say. It was hard to remember to trust myself or even believe in myself sometimes. It’s still a process. I think I’m doing pretty good. I’ve also always been very strong-willed and very much myself, so I do think that plays a part.”

She also discussed how she recharges. “I realized recently that I think my favorite thing in the world is to hang out,” she admitted with a laugh. “Like, I just love being around people that I love, people that make me laugh and make me feel whole. You know: kindred souls. That’s the stuff that keeps me sane. Laughing really is my cure. Also, I feel like being with my brother [Finneas] is kind of my cure, and my mama and my dad. I feel like they are always the ones when it is getting too much. Really Finneas makes everything better.”
