A surprising item tops the list of most stolen hotel amenities, according to a recent survey of over 1,200 hotel staff members and owners.

For many, staying in a hotel is a thrilling experience, complete with plush towels, crisp linens, and luxurious toiletries. However, when it’s time to check out, some guests take more than just memories with them. A new survey from Deluxe Holiday Homes reveals the most commonly stolen item from hotels, and it may surprise you.

According to the survey, the most stolen item is not toiletries, as one might expect, but rather towels. With over 88% of respondents reporting that towels are commonly stolen, it’s clear that this item is a hot commodity among hotel guests. The reason for this, according to a hospitality industry expert from Deluxe Holiday Homes, is that towels are easy to pack and sneak out.

Other items that made the list of most stolen hotel amenities include bathrobes, hangers, toiletries, blankets, pillows, hair dryers, pens, dishes, and remote controls. The survey also found that hotel theft costs the hospitality industry around $100 million annually in the U.S.

So, why do guests feel compelled to take these items? According to the expert, it’s often a matter of confusion about what is complimentary and what is not. For example, branded pens or mini soaps may be seen as freebies, while items like blankets and bathrobes are clearly not intended to be taken.

As the hospitality industry continues to grapple with the issue of hotel theft, it’s clear that education and awareness are key. By understanding what items are most commonly stolen and why, hotels can take steps to prevent theft and reduce losses.
