In the mid 1980s, nobody had ever seen a series quite like NBC’s Miami Vice. Standing in sharp contrast to traditional police dramas of its day and age, Miami Vice ingeniously drew upon numerous cultural fads for its main narrative universe and episodic storylines, bringing a taut balance between contemporary trends of the 1980s and hard-boiled crime of the conventional police procedural drama.
Making stars out of principal cast members like Don Johnson, Miami Vice has gone on to achieve coveted iconic status in the decade since its release. Now, nostalgic fans of the series can rejoice at the news that Miami Vice will officially receive an upcoming reboot, as reported by People magazine.
According to People, Joseph Kosinski — the director behind Tron: Legacy, Oblivion and 2022’s smash hit Top Gun: Maverick — will helm the project, marking the second time the filmmaker has worked with widely loved content from the 1980s after Top Gun.
Meanwhile, Dan Gilroy, the writer and director behind such films as Nightcrawler, The Bourne Legacy, and Kong: Skull Island, will produce the film’s screenplay.
Previously, Miami Vice dominated American television for six years, remaining one of NBC’s most popular series from its opening season in 1984 up to its series finale in 1990.
Throughout the series, Miami Vice focused on the personal lives and careers of Metro-Dade Police Department detectives James “Sonny” Crockett (Don Johnson) and his jaded partner, Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas).
In 2006, the series was rebooted into its first cinematic remake with 2006’s Miami Vice. Directed by Heat’s Michael Mann and starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs respectively, this first cinematic remake of Miami Vice earned shaky reviews from critics, mainly due to its overarchingly somber tone in comparison to the original show.
As of yet, no word has been announced on a prospective release date for the upcoming Miami Vice reboot, nor has there been any word on official cast listings for the movie.
