Ever since filming on The Devil Wears Prada 2 started rolling this summer, paparazzi photos of the movie’s fashion moments have already flooded social media. Some headlines have suggested these images are already “spoiling” or even “ruining” the movie before it has even wrapped, but at least one person disagrees: the sequel’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna.
“People will stand outside just for a glimpse of these actors and these characters that they love because seeing them in wardrobe has really excited people, especially since it’s a fashion movie,” McKenna told IndieWire in a recent interview. “We knew there would be a lot of interest. I personally hadn’t experienced this level of people coming out [to the set], but it’s the world we live in. In many ways, we’re speaking to a different world than we did in 2006…It stems from like a legitimate desire to see these characters again. As long as everyone’s safe, what an honor that people are still interested.”
After many years of rumors, Disney announced it was developing the film last year, and filming commenced in July. Original cast members Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci are all locked in to reprise their roles. Also joining the cast include Kenneth Branagh as Miranda Priestly’s husband as well as Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, B.J. Novak, and Pauline Chalamet in unspecified parts.
Hathaway was first photographed filming as her famous character, Andy Sachs, on July 21. She was spotted in a New York City crowd wearing a vibrant, color-block linen maxi dress by luxury designer Gabriela Hearst, with a curious garment bag with the word “Runway” emblazoned across it. (The original Devil Wears Prada movie takes place inside the offices of the fictional fashion magazine Runway.)
Since then, street style shots revealing the fashion ensembles of Hathaway as well as Streep, Blunt, and Ashley have also popped up online. However, the film’s plot is still unknown, so there is still some mystery left, and it is possible that some or many of these outfits are misdirects. McKenna also noted that viewers “crave in-person experiences and common experiences,” which is why the photos have been bringing fans back after the first movie was released almost 20 years ago.
“I got a little squeal when I saw them in costume the first time,” McKenna admitted to IndieWire about seeing Streep, Hathaway, Blunt, and Tucci back in character. “I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ It was like my son’s bar mitzvah or something. I felt like I wanted to take pictures!”
The untitled Devil Wears Prada sequel will be released on May 1, 2026.
