While the first two “Conjuring” movies were helmed by James Wan, both “The Devil Made Me Do It” and “Last Rites” feature Michael Chaves in the director’s chair. He has also directed other films in the “Conjuring” universe, including “The Curse of La Llorona” and “The Nun II.” The screenplay for “Last Rites” was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who shares a story credit with Wan.
“The Conjuring” movies are loosely based on real-life cases that the Warrens investigated in their career, with the sequel taking on the Enfield Poltergeist in London. To date, “The Conjuring” franchise has grossed over $2 billion, including spin-offs “The Nun” (2018), “Annabelle” (2014) and “The Curse of La Llorona” (2019), and is the highest grossing horror franchise in history. So far, the top-grossing movie of the franchise is the 2018 prequel “The Nun,” which grossed $366 million worldwide after capitalizing on the frights of the demon Valek (Bonnie Aarons). “The Nun II” grossed $269 million worldwide in 2023.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” releases in theaters and Imax Sept. 5 from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line. Watch the official trailer below.
