The college football coaching landscape is as dynamic as ever, with speculation swirling around where two prominent figures, Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly, will land next. Kiffin, the offensive mastermind, is a hot commodity attracting interest from SEC powerhouses and ACC contenders alike, while Kelly, recently dismissed from LSU, faces a pivot in his esteemed career, potentially finding a more suitable environment away from the intense national championship pressure. The ongoing coaching carousel promises significant shifts for several programs.

The college football world is in a constant state of flux, particularly when it comes to coaching changes. As one season progresses, the rumors intensify, creating a captivating coaching carousel. This year, much of the discussion centers on two contrasting figures: the highly sought-after Lane Kiffin and the recently available Brian Kelly, whose futures hold significant implications for their potential new programs.

Lane Kiffin: The Offensive Genius in High Demand

Lane Kiffin has cemented his reputation as an “offensive genius” and a charismatic coach, transforming programs wherever he goes. From his early days as offensive coordinator at USC, to his head coaching stints at Tennessee and then USC, his career has been marked by bold moves and innovative schemes. After rebuilding his career as Nick Saban’s offensive coordinator at Alabama and then as head coach at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Kiffin found renewed success at Ole Miss. His ability to guide the Rebels to a 7-1 record with a potential playoff bid has only amplified the interest from top-tier programs.

According to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, an “arms race” is brewing for Kiffin’s services, with LSU and Florida leading the charge. Finebaum views LSU as the “better job” due to its established infrastructure, despite its recent history of coaching turnover. He believes Kiffin’s personality and offensive philosophy would fit well with LSU’s culture, noting his familiarity with the SEC landscape. Finebaum’s insights, as shared on ESPN’s Get Up, highlight the intense competition for Kiffin’s talents.

Potential Landing Spots for Kiffin

The speculation surrounding Kiffin’s future extends beyond just LSU and Florida, as explored by USA TODAY Sports columnist Blake Toppmeyer. While staying put at Ole Miss remains a strong possibility, the lure of other opportunities is undeniable. Toppmeyer broke down Kiffin’s probabilities for 2026 as follows:

  • He returns to Ole Miss: 40%
  • He’s hired by LSU: 37%
  • He’s hired by Florida: 23%

This suggests that while a return to Oxford is possible, the field of other programs is collectively more likely to secure his services, as noted in the USA TODAY Sports AMA.

Florida fired Billy Napier on Oct. 19 during his fourth season as Gators coach. UF was 22-23 during Napier's tenure.
The Florida Gators are another high-profile program seeking new leadership, adding to the frenzy for coaches like Kiffin.

Florida Gators: A Familiar Sunshine State Appeal

Kiffin’s previous tenure as head coach at Florida Atlantic University (2017-2019) gives him ties to the state of Florida. He successfully rebuilt FAU into a contender, much like his work at Ole Miss. The Gators, having struggled in recent years, could present Kiffin with another compelling rebuild project, appealing to his track record of transforming programs.

Miami Hurricanes: ACC Opportunity and Culture Fit

CFB insider Bruce Feldman suggests that Miami could also be a strong contender, especially if the Hurricanes part ways with coach Manny Diaz. Feldman believes Kiffin would “have a hard time saying no” to Miami, citing the influence of former Miami players and the program’s cultural fit with Kiffin’s dynamic personality. The opportunity to compete against Clemson in the ACC, without the immediate density of SEC heavyweights, and with potentially better resources than Ole Miss, makes Miami an attractive prospect.

Clemson Tigers: A Philosophical Divide and a New Challenge

Interestingly, Clemson has emerged in some discussions, despite the current presence of long-time head coach Dabo Swinney. While Swinney has built a dynasty, his steadfast refusal to engage with the transfer portal stands in stark contrast to Kiffin’s embrace of it. Kiffin’s Ole Miss Rebels, for instance, ranked third nationally in the transfer portal for 2024. This philosophical difference suggests that if Clemson were ever to seek a change, Kiffin’s modern approach to roster building could be a significant draw. The Tigers also have a history of paying top dollar for coaching talent, making it a financially appealing option.

Staying at Ole Miss: Stability and Gratitude

Despite the widespread interest, Kiffin might choose to remain at Ole Miss. His past moves, including his abrupt departure from Tennessee for USC and subsequent firing from USC, underscore a period where he had to painstakingly rebuild his coaching career. His time as an offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama, followed by his successful stint at FAU and then Ole Miss, marks a period of significant personal and professional growth. Kiffin’s famous comment, “I needed Oxford more than it needed me,” suggests a deep sense of gratitude and a potential desire for stability at a Power Five program that gave him a second chance.

Brian Kelly: Where Will the Path Lead After LSU?

The firing of Brian Kelly by LSU has sent ripples through the coaching market. After a storied career that included consistent winning at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame, Kelly’s tenure in Baton Rouge ended abruptly following an “embarrassing home loss” to Texas A&M. The primary issues at LSU for Kelly were identified as a perceived “lack of fit” with the culture and the immense “national championship expectations” that ultimately went unmet.

Penn State fired James Franklin on Oct. 12 after a third straight loss. The Nittany Lions were 104-45 in 11-plus seasons under Franklin.
Coaching changes are frequent; even established coaches like James Franklin, whose Penn State tenure ended, can find themselves on the move.

Blake Toppmeyer suggests that Kelly might take a break, “sit out this cycle, collect some buyout checks,” and re-evaluate his options for the next year. However, if jobs open this cycle, he posits a couple of intriguing fits:

  • Missouri: If Eli Drinkwitz were to leave, Missouri could be an ideal destination. Kelly, with his Midwest roots and history of consistent winning, would likely be a better cultural fit in Columbia than he was in Baton Rouge. Crucially, Missouri wouldn’t carry the same national championship demands as LSU, aligning more with Kelly’s proven ability to build competitive, high-level programs without the pressure of an immediate title.
  • Wisconsin: Similarly, if Luke Fickell were to be fired, Kelly could represent a significant upgrade for Wisconsin. His disciplined approach and winning pedigree would be welcomed in a program that values consistency and strong fundamentals.

The Ongoing Coaching Carousel: Who’s Next?

The coaching hot seat is a perennial fixture in college football, and this season is no different. Programs are always looking for an edge, and underperforming coaches face intense scrutiny. According to Blake Toppmeyer, two coaches who could be next on the chopping block are:

  • Hugh Freeze (Auburn): A loss to Vanderbilt for the second consecutive season could be the final straw for the embattled Auburn coach.
  • Jonathan Smith (Michigan State): Despite being only in his second year, a sixth straight Big Ten loss could put Smith in a precarious position, especially since he was not hired by the current athletic director and university president.
UCLA fired DeShaun Foster on Sept. 14 after the Bruins fell to 0-3 following a home loss to New Mexico. The Bruins were 5-10 in Foster's one-plus season in charge.
Even coaches early in their tenures, like DeShaun Foster at UCLA, can face early dismissals if results don’t materialize quickly.

Group of Five Playoff Contenders

Beyond the Power Five, the race for a spot in the College Football Playoff from the Group of Five conferences is also heating up. Every indicator points to the American Athletic Conference (AAC) as the most likely conference to produce the qualifier. The Mountain West suffered significant setbacks with Boise State’s losses, opening the door wider for the AAC’s top teams, including Navy, Tulane, Memphis, USF, and North Texas. The eventual conference champion from this group appears to be a near lock for a playoff berth.

A notable sleeper outside the AAC is James Madison from the Sun Belt. Their only loss came against Louisville, a strong playoff contender, keeping their hopes alive for a surprise run.

The college football coaching landscape remains a thrilling arena of strategic decisions, calculated risks, and passionate fan bases. As the season progresses, the future paths of coaches like Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly will undoubtedly shape the competitive balance of the sport for years to come.
