Here at Parade, we’re big hot dog fans. The cookout staple is delicious as-is, but it’s also the perfect vehicle for culinary creativity. Martha Stewart likes hers fully loaded, the Rolling Stones prefer theirs with mashed potatoes and baked beans, you can air fry them with cheese or spiral cut them for crispy, crunchy edges—and the list goes on.
At this point, it feels like we’ve exhausted every way to dress up the humble hot dog. But just when we thought we’d seen it all, along came a post from content creator @hrnaeatz that stopped us mid-scroll: marinated hot dogs.
Yes, marinated. We were a little confused at first, but once we watched the video, we understood the genius of this method and can’t wait to give it a try. In the video, @hrnaeatz promises that these hot dogs are “life-changing,” and we think he’s onto something here.

Marinated Hot Dogs: The Secret’s in the Soak
Oftentimes, it’s the toppings that make the hot dog (just ask anyone from New York or Chicago), but this recipe starts long before the grill gets going to infuse the sausages with smoky, tangy, sweet and spicy flavor.
In the video, @hrnaeatz says that he had marinated hot dogs at a friend’s BBQ a few weeks ago and hasn’t stopped thinking about them since. He reached out to his friend to see if he’d share his recipe and lucky for all of us, he did.
You start by butterflying the hot dogs down the middle, which not only helps them soak up more flavor, but also helps create those perfect crispy edges once they’re cooked. Then comes the marinade.
This flavor-packed blend combines BBQ sauce, mustard, brown sugar, vinegar and a dash of cayenne. Add in a couple pantry staples like garlic and onion powder, and you’ve got a full-on flavor bomb. The hot dogs go straight into a zip-top bag with the marinade, where they’ll hang out in the fridge for at least four hours, though an overnight marinade is best, if you have the time.
This soaking time allows the hot dogs to absorb the marinade inside and out. Instead of seasoning your dogs on the outside or relying on toppings to bring the flavor, this technique infuses the flavor deep into every bite. It’s a twist that’s so obvious once you try it, you’ll wonder why this isn’t already a cookout standard.

How to Make Marinated Hot Dogs Your Own
Once your hot dogs are marinated and ready to go, the rest is totally up to you. Grill them, fry them, air fry them, toss them on your Blackstone griddle—whatever method you like best. The butterflied shape means they’ll get those beautiful charred ridges, with caramelized edges that give you a little snap and a ton of smoky flavor.
You can keep it classic with a soft bun and simple toppings, or go wild. The deep, tangy flavor from the marinade pairs beautifully with crunchy pickles, slaw or even a slice of sharp cheddar. Want to lean into the heat? Add sliced jalapeños or a drizzle of spicy mayo.
This recipe also works great for meal prep or feeding a crowd. You can marinate a big batch the night before, then just throw them on the grill when you’re ready. Whether it’s a weeknight dinner or a weekend cookout, marinated hot dogs will absolutely steal the show.
This hack is easy and inexpensive. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time you make hot dogs, but with this one little change, you just might feel like you did.
