You’ve heard of super fruits, aka fruits that are packed with nutrients, antioxidants, fiber, and other benefits to your health. Popular super fruits include cranberries, goji berries, pomegranates, grapes, and more relevantly, blueberries — and they’ve got a big fan from the food celebrity world. Alton Brown, recognized for his longtime appearances on Food Network, supports all food that encourages brain health in his latest partnership with supplement brand Neuriva.

In an exclusive interview paired with an exquisite cooking class, Brown told Health Digest that blueberries are the latest trend in terms of superfoods. “My doctor now is saying the fruit of all fruits is wild blueberries,” the “Good Eats” star explained while mixing up a recipe for overnight oats. Brown prioritizes sleep and nutrition, especially during the transition to daylight saving time, and he often looks to berries to meet his health goals. “The way I look at it is that anything that’s a berry is good to eat,” he said — and it seems as though science backs him up.

The reason wild blueberries are classified as a superfood is due to the fact that they carry approximately twice as many beneficial antioxidants as their counterparts (via Indigena Skincare). “They’re packed with polyphenols, and polyphenols are micro chemicals, micronutrients, that do all kinds of things for our body,” Alton Brown told Health Digest when referring to consuming berries in general. 

When you eat berries every day — like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries — you become more mentally sharp, your gut gets healthier, and you lower your risk of heart disease. “The more color they have, the better,” Brown added. It looks like the popular health phrase “eat the colors of the rainbow” comes into play here — peaches, pears, oranges, apricots, and mangoes are all further examples of fresh foods that are high in antioxidants. Now, we are not saying you have to throw every fruit known to man into your daily eating habits to stay healthy, but it is a good idea to frequently incorporate foods like berries that aid your body.
