The long-awaited return of Battinson is in sight.
The sequel to Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman,” starring Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, is preparing to begin shooting in the spring, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed in a letter to shareholders on Thursday, Aug. 7.
The update comes after years of delays for the highly anticipated next “Batman” movie, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2027. The film was previously set for release in October 2025 before being postponed to October 2026 and then pushed again to October 2027.
Released in 2022, “The Batman” introduced Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, two years after he has taken on the role of Batman. Zoë Kravitz also starred as Catwoman, Paul Dano played The Riddler and Colin Farrell was The Penguin. Farrell reprised his role in the HBO series “The Penguin” in 2024 and received an Emmy nomination for the role.
As fans clamored for updates about the sequel to “The Batman,” Reeves confirmed in late June that he had finally completed the screenplay. The director shared a photo of himself posing with the script, which showed a bat on the cover page.
‘The Batman 2’ sequel with Robert Pattinson is delayed another year: What we know
On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in July, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed he had read Reeves’ “Batman” script and said, “I like it.” Gunn seemed to suggest the movie was on track to meet the 2027 release date. “We’re headed in the right direction,” he said. “There’s some things we’ve still got to work out, but it’s headed in the right direction, for sure.”
Gunn previously defended Reeves’ writing pace amid complaints that the sequel was taking too long. “Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it,” Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
How ‘The Batman’ reinvents Gotham City for Robert Pattinson’s new Caped Crusader
The “Batman” update comes after the success of Gunn’s own “Superman,” a reintroduction of the title character that also serves as the first film in a relaunched DC Universe. But “The Batman” is not considered part of that franchise and takes place in a different fictional world than “Superman.”
Separately, DC has also announced another Batman movie, “The Brave and the Bold,” which will be part of the same universe as “Superman” and is expected to feature a different actor than Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. No casting for “The Brave and the Bold” has been revealed, though Alan Ritchson has been a popular suggestion among fans.
In its Aug. 7 letter to shareholders, Warner Bros. Discovery also teased that Gunn is “busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family.” This includes a new “Wonder Woman” film, and Gunn has said he is planning to make another movie starring Superman, which is not a traditional “Superman” sequel. In a Threads post on Aug. 7, Gunn revealed he is “well into writing” that mystery film.
