With its rolling hardwood forests, pine-covered ridges, bottomland swamps, and meandering river valleys, it’s prime habitat for white-tailed deer. The Ozark Mountains and Ouachita National Forest are two of the most prolific deer regions in the state, offering thick cover, acorn-rich uplands, and quiet places for fawns to grow. Safe Practices During Hunting Season

The deer rut in Arkansas overlaps hunting season, so it’s a busy time in the woods. If you’re out observing wildlife, here are some ways to protect yourself from being mistaken for a deer and injured:

• Wear fluorescent orange.

• Stick to state parks, wildlife refuges, or private land where hunting isn’t allowed or on days and hours when it is restricted.

• Stay on established trails rather than off-roading through the underbrush.

• Make some noise occasionally to let any concealed hunters know where you are.

If you know a hunter or outdoors enthusiast, consider asking them to guide you through the woods. They can teach you the best ways to find and observe deer, as well as important hunting-season safety tips.

Safety Around “Deer Gone Wild”

Mature Arkansas bucks often weigh between 150 and 200 pounds, especially in the fertile delta regions where food is abundant. They are equipped with multi-pronged sharp antlers, strong hooves, and teeth, and can run up to 30 mph and leap over an 8-foot fence. Moreover, bucks in rut are not thinking clearly, which makes them unpredictable. All this means observers need to stay at least 100 feet away. And this caution applies to dogs as well. They can also become startled and may body slam you, strike with their hooves, or bite. So give them at least a 50-foot berth as well.

What does it look like when a deer gets aggressive toward you? It might pin its ears back, stomp, make circling movements, walk parallel to you in the woods rather than veering away, or stare at you intensely. If a deer behaves this way, slowly back away. Never block its escape route, and make sure you have an escape plan for yourself. If it charges, get behind a tree, car, or other heavy obstacle.

When Deer Come for You

Even if you don’t seek out deer on your own, one may find you at the worst possible time: when you’re driving. Fall brings a spike in animal-vehicle collisions, especially in rural areas. The most dangerous times are early morning and just after sunset when they are most active, and deer rut season increases that danger significantly as they behave more unpredictably. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

• Drive slower in rural areas, especially where roadside brush limits visibility.

• Use high beams when possible.

• If you see one deer on or near the road, remember they often move in herds so there may be others about to cross.

• If a deer runs into your path, brake firmly, don’t swerve sharply. A controlled collision is safer for you and your passengers than potentially rolling your vehicle.

• If you hit a deer and it dies, drag the carcass from the road if you can do so safely.

• Stay away from injured animals as they can be aggressive.

• Report it to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission or local law enforcement if the animal is not dead, is still on the road, or caused injuries or major vehicle damage.

• Take photos of the scene for insurance purposes.
