Teyana Taylor is adding new skills to her plate.
Taylor, 34, announced in an Instagram reel shared on Friday, June 11, that she has begun attending culinary school. In the video, the “Google Me” singer is seen wearing an apron and chef’s hat along with her culinary school’s uniform shirt, and dancing to GloRilla’s hit song “LET HER COOK” alongside her daughter, Iman “Junie” Tayla Shumpert Jr., 9.
In the caption, the singer wrote, “Went into my first day of Culinary school with a banggggggg s/o to my Twinskiiiiiii Junebuggggggg! 😩🤣 Wow… it’s really happening. A dream I’ve carried in my heart for so long is finally becoming a reality and I’m feeling every bit of it.”
Taylor explained how cooking and baking have been a part of her life throughout the years, writing, “Cooking and baking have always been more than just hobbies for me; they’ve been my passion, my peace, my therapy. Since I was a little girl, I remember being glued next to whoever was in the kitchen while the other kids played around! Lol watching all the amazing women in my life cook all our favorite meals with so much love and joy.”
Taylor then elaborated on how cooking helped her feel connected to her community while growing up in New York City. “I must say I def got a cooking ass family lol That’s where it all started. And by the time I was 13/14, I was the ‘hood Betty Crocker’ in Harlem baking cakes for the neighbors and anyone who asked. 😩 Ya girl was ah hustlaaaaaahhhh & that spark never left me. ✨” she wrote.

She concluded her caption by stating that she will be studying culinary and pastry arts, and thanked Alexis Welch Stoudemire “for introducing to an amazing school & convincing to get up and get to it 💪🏾 .”
Taylor’s big announcement was met with support in the comments. Kerry Washington wrote, “YAAAAAAAS CHEF. this is SOOOOOOOOOOO inspiring!!!!!” Iman chimed in, writing, “Passionately chasing your purpose ❤️🙌.” Niecy Nash commented a series of heart eye emojis.
Outside of the kitchen, Taylor has also continued to build her acting resumé. She will soon star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film One Battle After Another opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and more. The film hits theaters Sept. 26.
