NEED TO KNOW

  • A teenager took to Reddit to reveal that she was considering skipping prom after buying what she thought was her dream dress with her mom

  • She wanted to know if not going to the dance was an overreaction after revealing her mom’s betrayal

  • Many other Redditors rushed in with very strong reactions to the situation

A teen was left feeling betrayed and said that her mom hurt her confidence after they went shopping for a prom dress.

Taking to Reddit’s “Am I Overreacting” forum, a high schooler explained that she took her mom with her on a shopping expedition to find the perfect dress for the big dance. While out, she wrote that she “found a red dress I felt super confident in.”

“It was figure-hugging, and strapless with a slit on the right leg side,” she said, describing her dream dress. However, her mom was reportedly not a fan and recommended that she try on the dress “a couple sizes up” or find “something that doesn’t hug your stomach so tightly.”

In an attempt to appease her mom, she tried on a few other dresses but could not be swayed because she “loved” the original.

“I ended up purchasing the red dress I liked,” she said, or so she thought.

“I found some shoes at a different location today, so I took my dress out of the bag to try it on with the shoes. To my dismay, the dress did not look or fit the same way the dress in the store did when I bought it,” the disappointed teen wrote, adding that she realized it was not the right dress when she checked the tags.

Disappointed and hurt, she confronted her mom about being duped.

“I told her I am not wearing that dress to Prom, and she needs to find my dress or I will not even go,” she explained, adding that her mom was unmoved. “She keeps telling me it is such a fun experience and to just wear the dress and it will be fine.”

Writing that she didn’t have a date, the girl wanted to know if it would be wrong to skip the dance entirely since she doesn’t see the point in going without a “fitting dress.”

After her post went viral, the girl returned to share some additional information about the dress she wanted to buy, stressing that it “did not show cleavage, nor was it too short in any way.”

“It went all the way to the floor, and the slit was right above my knee,” she said.

She added that the strapless dress her mom selected didn’t even fit her right and “now does not stay up properly.”

While she’d love to return the incorrect dress and start over, she added that there was only a 24-hour return window, which had passed.

Upset by the situation, she said, “My confidence is completely gone.”

Redditors rushed in with very strong opinions.

“You’re definitely not overreacting, I’m so sorry that happened to you,” one person replied, urging the girl to “think about setting boundaries in the future.”

They continued, asking, “Do you have any other means of buying a dress or have any money saved that you could use towards that? I wouldn’t let your mom’s dumb move ruin your prom night. If you truly want to go to your prom, do it, just don’t have her involved in anyway. Ask a friend if you can get ready with them at their house and take pics there to avoid anymore mama drama.”

Since the girl likely couldn’t return to buy the dress she really wanted, someone else recommended alternative plans: “I know it isn’t ideal but I resell online and have found some stunning prom dresses at thrift shops for $20 or less.”

“I can’t believe she did that, so controlling. And sneaky,” yet another upset poster wrote. “This is your prom not hers.”

Some people took even stronger stances and provided some advice.

“Your mom is a toxic control freak and the best part of college will be her not being able to control you. My suggestion is 2 hours plus away from home for college,” one person wrote with another replying to write, “Another coast would be the best.”

Some people also warned the girl to remember this moment when it was time to buy a wedding dress.

One Redditor shared a personal anecdote and warning alongside their advice: “You’ve got to start setting boundaries. It’s going to be painful for YOU. She’ll try to make it seem painful to her, but it’s not & that’s not your problem,” they wrote, adding that they were “still being controlled & steered” at 44.

They added that their mom was struggling with dementia, and their relationship made helping even harder: “It’s hard to get her to respect a ‘you can’t drive anymore, it’s not safe,’ when I never set boundaries like ‘don’t change the dress I bought to one you prefer.’ “
