Taylor Swift has opened up about her dad’s major health battle, revealing that he had a quintuple bypass surgery.
While speaking on Travis and Jason Kelce’sNew Heights podcast on August 13—where she announced her upcoming twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl— the megastar, 35, said Scott Swift is doing “incredibly well” after undergoing the “really intense” procedure this summer.
“It all happened really quick. He went in—I know he would want me to say this because he really learned a lot through this process—he’s had a healthy, perfect EKG every year that he’s gone in to get his physicals. Perfect EKG.”
The ‘Fortnight’ singer continued, “But what found his five hard blockages in his heart was a resting stress test, so he’s been telling all his friends, ‘You need to get this stress test,’ ’cause that’s what’s actually preventative. If you can find that earlier, you don’t have to have a bypass surgery, you can sort out those blockages with stents and things that are a lot less invasive.
“So he finds out he’s got these blockages, they’re like, ‘We gotta do this like tomorrow. You shouldn’t—we don’t know how you walked in here dude, this is crazy.’ He was of course saying to our family, ‘You guys are busy, I don’t want you guys to have to like come in here, you and Austin are busy, you don’t have to do this.’
Travis, 35, then cut in, saying Scott, 73, was being the “brave” and “strong” father.
Taylor then added some humor to the serious conversation, prompting some laughs from her NFL star boyfriend and Jason, 37.
“He said something like, ‘When a cat is injured, it curls up around a tree and heals itself.’ I was like, ‘Dad, cats don’t have quintuple bypass surgeries. That’s wild. You’re just saying stuff now. That doesn’t mean anything to me.”
The 14-time Grammy Ward winner then revealed that when Scott woke up from surgery, she was waiting for him along with her mom, Andrea Swift, her brother, Austin Swift, and her dad’s best friend.
Taylor then shared that Scott acted out “a comedy set for like 15 minutes” and was “the funniest he’s ever been, and he’s usually really funny.”
She continued, “We didn’t know how many blockages he had, and I was like, ‘Dad, you had a quintuple bypass. You five, that’s crazy. That’s more than we thought.’ And he’s like, ‘Well you see, I come from a very competitive family.'”
The superstar then burst out laughing along with Travis and Jason, before continuing, “And it was kind of wild, because it was very parent-child reversal in a lot of ways. My brother and my mom and I were each taking shifts in the ICU and staying with him 24/7.”
The “All Too Well” singer revealed that Austin, 33, told her that she needed to take her dad’s phone so that he could rest instead of FaceTiming his friends. However, no one in the Swift family wanted to be the one to take his phone.
“It’s like, we gotta take our teenage son’s phone away from him ’cause he’s FaceTiming all night,” Taylor joked.
She then said that Scott “tried to give guitar picks to all the nurses and doctors, but he wasn’t wearing pants, he didn’t have pockets, hospital gown.”
The songwriting legend then referred to taking care of her dad as a “surreal” experience, as she was used to seeing him build things for her as a kid, and now she was building his shower chair, walker, and bed for him.
“We just all moved in with him for the whole summer pretty much,” she continued.
Taylor then shared that Scott “couldn’t really walk on his own” and called him “the loveliest patient ever” before Travis called said he was “full of life” and “appreciative.”
“My dad’s like, ‘New arteries, new me,'” the music icon continued.
Taylor then revealed that Andrea, 67, “just got a new knee” and is “doing great.”
Scott and Andrea wed in February 1988 before welcoming Taylor in December 1989 and Austin in March 1992.
According to Verywell Health, a quintuple bypass surgery “is a complex procedure done to treat people with five severely blocked major arteries that feed the heart.”
It continues, “Blood vessels are removed from another part of the body and transplanted onto each affected heart vessel to reroute blood flow around the blockages.”
