(The Center Square) – Just as the Howard Frankland Bridge Replacement Project is completed, the Interstate 275 Express Expansion Moving Florida Forward Project is launching.

The infrastructure improvements in Pinellas County are expected to impact travel times up to 85% and create $1.4 billion in economic value, says Gov. Ron DeSantis. Clarity in the latter – whether new creation, existing, or a combination – was not given.

“Our Moving Florida Forward Initiative is delivering major improvements years ahead of schedule, reducing delays for families and businesses, and making long-term investments that will support Florida’s growth for generations to come,” the second-term Republican said.

District 7 within the state Department of Transportation has never had a project as large as the bridge replacement. Traffic began crossing this summer and capacity is 50% as Labor Day weekend approaches.

The bridge is linked to the Gateway Expressway and I-275 Express project. The state says it should withstand hurricanes.

The I-275 expansion widens the interstate and adds express lanes. The project is on track for delivery 15 years ahead of schedule.

The Moving Forward Initiative aims to alleviate congestion traffic in more than 20 locations. The state has a $68 billion commitment in the next five years.

“Governor DeSantis’ Moving Florida Forward Initiative is transforming Tampa Bay’s transportation system and connecting communities,” said Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue. “I’m proud of the work of our FDOT team who is making quick work of the demolition of the old Howard Frankland Bridge and beginning construction of the much needed expansion of I-275 in Pinellas County.”
