According to public voter records obtained by The Post on Sunday, August 3, the Euphoria star has been registered with the Republican Party of Florida since June 2024. Her registration is listed in Monroe County.
The revelation comes on the heels of an American Eagle campaign featuring the 27-year-old actress, which was intended to spotlight the brand’s denim. One ad shows Sweeney walking up to a billboard and correcting the word “genes” to “jeans” with a white line, while another features her lying down, zipping up her jeans, and explaining, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color.” She ended the conversation by clarifying, “My genes are blue,” with a narrator concluding, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
The campaign prompted a lot of chatter online — some highly criticizing the Immaculate actress, while others ran to her defense.
“Yes. It’s literally giving off the fact the ad is saying she has good genes and that they’re better than black people/people of color,” one person claimed on X
Another noted, “the ad, with this wording, was definitely created to stir controversy.”
One user on TikTok said, “She is advertising jeans! Jeans people. Y’all are too deep for me,” while another agreed, “this is such a non issue.”

The backlash escalated as celebrities including Doja Cat and Lizzo appeared to mock the campaign. In response, American Eagle issued a statement clarifying the intent of the ads: “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans.” The company emphasized, “Her jeans. Her story,” adding, “Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Sweeney has yet to comment on the controversy.
