Sydney Sweeney made a show-stopping entrance at the 2025 Met Gala on Monday night. The Euphoria star paid homage to screen siren Kim Novak, a fellow blonde bombshell known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, wearing a custom totally encrusted plunging black Miu Miu gown.
The A-line dress also featured a gold rosette detail along the keyhole cutout and beaded fringe dripping from the shoulders. Sweeney’s gown differed slightly from the original reference, which she shared on Instagram just minutes before hitting the red carpet. Instead of Novak’s separate gown and shawl set, Sweeney’s look was all one piece.

Sweeney’s hair was styled in a slicked-back updo with a pin curl, while her makeup included a retro-inspired double wing.
Sweeney’s look, based on a costume of Novak’s from the 1968 film The Legend of Lylah Clare, also featured a hidden reference to Joan Crawford, who wore the same gown in The Bride Wore Red, a 1937 romantic comedy. As the movie’s name suggests, the beaded dress was originally made in a scarlet hue. In the Old Hollywood era, it wasn’t uncommon for studios to recycle costumes.
Based on Monica Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the Met’s annual Costume Institute exhibit this year pays homage to Black menswear designers and trendsetters. According to Vogue, the exhibit will feature 12 sections: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism. Co-chairs of the 2025 gala include Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James named honorary chair.

Sweeney has attended every Met Gala since 2022. Last year, she memorably swapped her buttery locks for a jet black bob with bangs. Sweeney selected a pale blue off-the-shoulder Miu Miu gown with floral embellishments—a reference to the 2024 gala’s “Garden of Time” dress code. Leather elbow-length gloves and De Beers diamonds completed her look.
Sweeney previously wore Miu Miu at the 2023 Met Gala, and has been affiliated with Miuccia Prada’s spinoff label for nearly three years.

“I’ve dreamt of being a Miu Miu girl from the moment I [was] introduced to fashion,” the actress told Vogue in honor of her first campaign for the Italian brand, which promoted their Wander handbag. “Miu Miu was one of the first fashion shows that my stylist showed me on Vogue Runway, and I was obsessed.”
In April, Sweeney attended the Stagecoach music festival in Indio, California, where she embraced two antique fashion trends: corsets and bloomers. In a series of photos shared by Paris Hilton, the actress posed with Lizzo and Hilton’s aunt, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kyle Richards.
