“I Really Love My Husband,” a well-received romantic comedy from this year’s SXSW Film Festival, has been swooped up by indie distributor Entertainment Squad.

Writer-director G.G. Hawkins’ project about the complexities of modern love (and one claustrophobic honeymoon) has sold worldwide rights to the boutique firm founded by Shaked Berenson. The shop will take the film out for a U.S. theatrical release later in 2025 and launch international territory sales out of next week’s Cannes Film Festival.

The film stars Madison Lanesey, Travis Quentin Young, Arta Gee and Lisa Jacqueline Starrett. Critics have praised the film for its raw and honest portrayal of a relationship and acerbic wit. It currently sits at 92% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 reviews.

“Our goal was to capture the beauty and chaos of messy relationships — the comedy, the pain, the cringe — and set against the breathtaking backdrop of Bocas del Toro, Panamá,” said Hawkins. “The response from audiences at SXSW was overwhelming, and I’m thrilled to bring that conversation to a wider crowd.”

Producer Elle Roth-Brunet added that the film “turns a familiar fantasy into something dark, surprising, and honest — a dramedy with bite and heart. We’re honored to have a partner who champions bold, emotionally truthful storytelling.”

Bernson praised the work as one that “lingers long after the credits roll, and we’re proud to bring it to theaters and beyond.”

“I Really Love My Husband” comes from Night Breeze Productions, produced by Roth-Brunet and co-producers Natalie LeVeck, Jenna Mackey, Michael Polk and Maria Laura Ventura. Executive producers include Janek Ambros, Diane Brunet, Andrea Kent and Peter Kent.

Co-executive producers include Tommy Cornelius, Stanley Monroe, Raven Angeline Whisnant, Kelli A. White and consulting executive producer Madison Lanesey. The film is a co-production with Lu Mac Productions and New 32 Productions, in association with Pan Up Productions, BraveMaker, One Sock Pictures, Seedling Media Productions, Milagros Productions and Assembly Line Entertainment.

The deal was negotiated by Glen Reynolds of Circus Road Films on behalf of the filmmakers. Hawkins is represented by Curate and Granderson Des Rochers. She also hosts the “No Film School” podcast, which features interviews with leading filmmakers and industry voices.

Recent Entertainment Squad releases include “Paper Spiders,” starring Lili Taylor and Stefania LaVie Owen, the Tribeca Audience Award-winning dramedy “Cherry” and another SXSW favorite in “Peak Season.”
