Brace yourselves for the worldwide debut of a brand new Star rap!
Star Toomey got a bad rap on Survivor 48, being pegged by other players as someone who was untrustworthy in the game. On the flip side, she delivered not one but two good raps before leaving us on this week’s episode.
Star was voted out by the tribe after Mitch Guerski refused to join the Revolution alliance that was willing to go to rocks to take out a member of the strong four. After Mitch passed on the opportunity, Kamilla Karthigesu bailed, leaving only Star and Mary Zheng on the outs, as the enemies indeed were plottin’ to take out the free-spirited faan favorite.
Why did no one in the game seem to trust Star, even though we never saw her backstabbing anyone? Why didn’t she play her Shot in the Dark since she knew she might be going home? Does she regret letting Eva have the immunity idol that could have saved her? And, most important of all, does she have one more Survivor rap in her? We caught up with the Star of Survivor the morning after her televised ouster.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What did you think was going to happen when you walked into that last Tribal Council?
STAR TOOMEY: When I walked into that last Tribal Council, I thought that it would be four to five, as in four for me, five for Mary, and Mary would be going home. I really did. I thought the numbers were on my side. I already had told Mary like, “Hey, girl, I got to write your name down. It’s either me or you.” She already told me, “Hey, girl, I have to write your name down. It’s either me or you.” We had that mutual respect that somebody has to sacrifice somebody in order for us to continue. I at least have the better judgment that the numbers would be one short of me and one extra to Mary. But, unfortunately, it was the other way around.
It sounds like you thought you only had one vote to spare so didn’t want to lose yours playing your Shot in the Dark, but were you close at all to playing it?
The thing with the Shot in the Dark is I already knew they were trying to flush it out of me. So I’m like, “I can’t play that Shot in the Dark because that means tomorrow or the next Tribal Council, I am a sitting duck and it will be me.” So I really did think that this honesty and loyalty thing that everyone was talking about, I at least thought that that also followed with me. Because out of everybody and everything that I’ve been watching, I’ve been the most honest and loyal throughout the whole time.
So I really thought that for some reason, unfortunately. I should have went with my better judgment because Jeff even asked me, “Will you play Shot in the Dark?” And I’m like, “No, no, I won’t.” Because I’m so confident enough that I know for a fact at least original Lagi is not writing my name. But I did not know original Lagi indeed wrote my name.
Here is something I do not understand at all. Everyone kept saying how untrustworthy you were. What was that based on, because we didn’t see you doing lots of lying and deceiving and backstabbing so I’m a bit perplexed?
I think they were projecting. Everyone that was saying “honest and loyal” were lying. You were watching it happen in real time. The only person that anybody was ever honest and loyal to was their number one. And even then, we know in a game of Survivor, you’re either going to flip on that number one — we saw it before in the past — or you’re going to make it all the way and you’re going to stay locked in, and everyone that’s in your way, you don’t care.
So I really felt when they’re calling me chaotic, I’m like, “Literally, you’re watching me! I’m sitting, I’m watching everyone scramble and wrestle and try to figure out what’s happening.” And I’m like, “Bro, why are y’all being so paranoid?” You either got it or you don’t. I always have it. Some people don’t.
You’re not hearing them say all that stuff when you’re out there so what was it like…
Oh, yes, I am. Eva basically called me chaotic pretty much throughout the whole time, and I’m like, “Girl, I’m not even talking to you or checking for you. I’m so confused.” A lot of times I was told “They just don’t know if they can trust you.” And I’m like,” I’m literally with y’all the whole time! I am not even doing anything crazy!” Even then too, sometimes you would see me walk and try to get some information and talk to people and kind of get some things, but at the end of the day, I was always taking that information back to the people who I thought I was rocking with. So once again, to call me chaotic, it’s just projecting.

You’re doing the math. You’re at a situation where you got eight people left in the game, you need to go four on four. You pitch it to Mitch, he’s not buying what you’re selling. I imagine the frustration levels you’re feeling at that point were pretty high.
So with Mitch, the thing with that situation is they made him feel like he was important. And that’s why I feel like when some people make you feel important and make you feel like, “Man, I like you,” and you think they actually do like you, of course you’re like, “I don’t know if I can trust you.” You’re going to be a little topsy-turvy.
Of course, we saw a little prior to that conversation, I was getting on him about his snoring. So I already think he felt a way. If it’s not my for man, I can’t sleep at the island, man! There’s no way. He can go. I couldn’t take it anymore. I only wrote his name down because I couldn’t take the snoring. So, I get why he would write my name down, because I wrote his name down, but at least my reasoning was because I needed sleep.
How does everything potentially change if Mitch goes along with your plan to go to rocks?
They didn’t show it, but after Joe won. I’m like, “All right, I’ve been saying the name. Would you all do Shauhin? Or would y’all do Eva? We have to figure this out. Joe won. But that doesn’t mean we’re done. We can still dismember this group. We can still break this alliance. We can still do something to cut through.”
But sometimes when you’re starting a revolution, you got sucks. People who unfortunately are too scared to really play the game and they just want to be safe. Last time I checked, being safe never helped. Yeah, it might last you an extra day, but we’re talking about a million dollars. I never heard anyone get a million dollars by playing it safe. I know I didn’t get the million dollars, but at least I can say I never played it safe.

You said something interesting earlier about how people were only being honest and faithful to their number one. So Kamilla and Kyle got each other, Eva and Joe — those sort of pairs. Did you ever have anyone in this game you considered a solid ally?
Unfortunately for me, I never had a number one. No. I feel like everyone was pretty much locked in, and once they were locked in, and there was no room for me to even get a number one, honestly. Because when you’re looking at the pairs by the time of the pre merge, we already knew — Sai and Cedrek, they’re hand in hand. Joe and Eva, they’re hand in hand. A part of me always felt like Kyle and Kamilla were working together because every time I saw them going to the water well, they would always go together and there was no one else going with them.
So, of course, by then it’s hand in hand. And then we see David and Mary who I try to kind of get into that and make it a trio. But once again, when it comes to partner games, like we saw in that challenge, you’re either first or you pick last or you get the leftovers, and I’m always getting the leftovers,
Anyone that doesn’t win, you’re going to look back at certain points in the game land be like “Maybe I should have zigged when I zagged here.” Do you regret letting Eva keep the immunity idol in the Beware Advantage you found?
No. Actually, my only regret is not voting the way we should have voted that the split tribal. My only regret is I didn’t save Sai. If I would’ve saved Sai, the game would’ve been different because that was the only time where me, Chrissy and even Mitch could have worked together. Obviously, Joe had the immunity necklace that day, but Eva didn’t. And if we were ever going to get anyone out and break that alliance, that was the only time we could do it.
And after watching, I’m like, maybe the game would’ve changed for Chrissy. Maybe the game would’ve changed for Sai, but maybe in that moment we all should have worked together to take care of the bigger fish and then eventually worry about each other. So that’s my only regret, not saving Sai.
What was it like when you first saw the “My Enemies Be Plottin” rap on TV?
I was like, “No way! Oh my God!” And on top of that, they put a fire beat behind it. So that was already dope. But that whole segment of you watching the commercial, you don’t expect to see that. I was like, yeah, 10s all across the board. I loved it. I think that was my most favorite of the season. My favorite part of the whole show is the intro, of course. But I think that rap right there, that whole segment topped it up. Man, that was really great.
What was it like when you got to Ponderosa with Cedrek, Chrissy, and David? What was the energy like over there?
Man, it was love. And honestly, I can say that my time on the island, prior to that voting, I was already kind of feeling defeated. You are working so hard to try to find your way in this place. You’re working so hard to at least make these connections with people. You go to make conversations, and nobody’s responding. Everyone’s in a big group talking and you say something and nobody laughs, nobody talks. So you feel the vibes. You’re not a part of the group.
So getting away and finally being with people who really did care for me and welcome me with open arms…. [Star gets emotional and sounds like she is holding back tears] The first time I landed on Ponderosa, Cedrek, Chrissy, and David was all sitting on the stairs waiting for me. And then the moment where you think you’re going to cry and you feel so defeated, they uplifted me, hugged me, and all my pain kind of went away for a little bit.
I was like: Wow, this is what I’ve been wanting. Community people, true allies. Not, you’re picking on me because I’m not a part of the group. That’s childish. We’re here to play a game. The group cannot win a million. Only one person can win a million. And to know that there are people who can put that game to the side and say, “Hey, you’re a person, come here, man. I know it sucks, but it’ll be okay” — that was the best welcoming feeling coming to Ponderosa.
And I ate a great steak that night! I don’t know if a lot of people know, but I’ve been a pescatarian for like 10 plus years. They didn’t show it, but I ate some bad, bad, bad snails on the island. That second challenge when we’re doing the trunk and we’re lifting, and I was throwing up my guts literally an hour before that. And that day I said, “I’m not eating seafood anymore.” When I went to that merge feast, the first thing I ate was chicken. When I went to Ponderosa, the first thing I had was steak. And it was good.
You’re not the first person those snails have taken down.
Yeah, it’s vicious. I woke up at… man, I’m not even going to describe, but the point is, it was traumatizing. I’ve never experienced that. You eat snails at the sea spot, but these were real Fijian snails.

You were the most energetic contestant I had ever met before the game started. What did you notice in terms of your body and your energy levels once you got into the game and the food goes away, and the snails thing happens, and Mitch is keeping you up at night with his snoring. How hard was that on your body?
It was very hard. We’re doing these challenging challenges, there’s no shade so all we have is the sun beating down, you’re eating coconut. I don’t know if anybody noticed, but every scene you see me in, I at least have a coconut in my hand because that’s how much I’m just trying to get some type of nourishment for my body, some type of energy.
I felt the drain. It’d be times where I’m walking on the sand and I’m like, “Yo, I can’t even move.” That energy is depleted. And then on top of that, you see people taking to other people to these challenges and you see people crying,” I haven’t eaten, I haven’t eaten.” And it’s like, “Shut up. Neither have I. Do you see me crying? I’m not.” But once again, only the strongest soldiers survive.
You mentioned the snail situation. What’s something else that happened out there that never made it to TV that you wish we had seen?
As I’m watching, I see some comments, and everyone’s like, “Why did she tell Joe about the Beware Advantage when she first found it?” So the thing is, Joe came to me first and told me he wanted to work with me. I didn’t really care about working with anyone when we first got on the island because I was just happy to be there. We’re all just trying to get bamboo and wood. You see that I’m getting my little two pieces of wood every so often.
But he was like, “Have you found anything yet?” And I’m like, “No, I’m not looking.” But that’s because we all said we wouldn’t look, and as a honest and loyal person, I agreed to it. And then he’s like, “Well, I’m looking.” I’m like, “Oh, are you really?” And he is like, “If I find something, I’ll tell you. If you find something, you tell me.”
Now, he could have been playing me. Geminis do it often. My wife’s a Gemini. But I really believed that he wanted to work with me. So when I find this be weird advantage, I’m like, “I got to tell Joe. I got to tell Joe.” I shouldn’t have told Joe because he didn’t help me. And on top of that, it just created a whole lot of domino effect chaos that eventually ended up in my demise.

Okay, you are not getting out of here without giving me a new Survivor rap. Let’s see what you got. Hit me with some bars.
Oh, Lagi, you did me wrong
But I ain’t mad because I ain’t writing your name for this song
I might vote you or maybe, maybe not
I’m not your friend because you voted me out
But it is okay, I love you because original Lagi ,you be cool
But I don’t like you, I don’t, because you lost me a million dollars
I can’t stand you, but I love you and I hope that you’re okay.
And I hope that you’re starving today, because I am eating a steak.
Yeaaaaaaaah!
That was my highlight. After I left, I said, “At least I’ll be fed.” And the thing that made me even happier — the next day, it’s pouring. My first day on Ponderosa, it’s pouring. And all I could think was, I hope everyone is wet and cold.
