NEED TO KNOW

  • Superman director James Gunn explained why he didn’t use the post-credits scenes to tease upcoming DC movies

  • Gunn said he doesn’t want to set up future franchise threads “unless it’s really for sure going to pay off” later for fans

  • Superman, in theaters now, has two brief end-credit scenes that feature star David Corenswet

Superman director James Gunn is explaining why he didn’t use the film’s post-credits scenes to set up sequels and spinoffs for the freshly rebooted DC movie universe.

Gunn, also a co-CEO of DC Studios and writer behind this Superman iteration, told ScreenRant he didn’t want to make any big reveals or squeeze in any A-lister stunt-casting in those final moments.

“I found in my time at Marvel that, first of all, the post-credit scenes of mine at Marvel that people liked the best were the stupid ones,” said the director, who previously made the three Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel Studios.

Gunn, 58, continued, “I really have found — and I’ve said it before — but I’ve set up things in the post-credit scenes, and Marvel has set up things in the post-credit scenes that never pay off. Unless it’s really for sure going to pay off. … But I don’t want to set up stuff just because it’s a shocking post-credit scene that we’re never going to pay off.”

Instead, said Gunn, he likes “giving the audience something for having stuck around through the credits and seeing who all the hardworking people are on the film. And so giving them something, I think, is fun.”

Spoiler alert: Superman has two brief scenes during the credits. One quick one shows the Man of Steel (David Corenswet) looking at Earth from outer space with the super-powered dog Krypto. The other scene shows a silly, mundane interaction between Superman and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi).

Looking ahead to future DC movies, Superman does hint at what’s next. In the final scene before the credits begin, Sirens star Milly Alcock shows up on screen as Supergirl, the foul-mouthed, party-girl cousin of Superman. Alcock, 25, is leading her own solo Supergirl movie, in theaters June 26, 2026.

Superman is in theaters now.
