Randy Newman is a national treasure. The musician has been nominated for 22 Academy Awards (winning twice) for composing such absolute classics as Toy Story’s “You Got a Friend in Me.” But back in 1977, he wrote an absolutely bizarre song titled “Short People.”
Sample lyrics:
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
To live
They got little hands
And little eyes
And they walk around
Tellin’ great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet
I guess the song was a not-so-thinly veiled commentary on prejudice. Still… kinda weird, right? But could a shorter stature offer advantages in a particular Survivor immunity challenge? Star Toomey certainly thought so. That evidence was captured on camera thanks to an exclusive deleted scene from this week’s episode of Survivor 48.
In the scene, which can be watched above, the Niu Nai tribe is gathered on the beach for a dramatic reading of the latest Tree Mail message, to be audibly delivered by Mary Zheng. “Take your time if your game is solid. If it’s shaky, you’ll need to hurry. The paranoid fear of your game collapsing might just land you on the jury,” reads Mary.
Eva Erickson and Kyle Fraser quickly and correctly deduce that the impending challenge is the Survivor classic where players need to balance blocks spelling out the word immunity without the stack crashing down along the way. We are then treated to a confessional interview with Star… because every confessional with Star is an absolute treat.
“This morning we get another Tree Mail where the way the wording was, they’re like, ‘Oh, it’s finally a balance or a touch kind of challenge,’” says Star, who then proceeds to break down who is best suited for such a contest.
“So that kind of helps because Joe is balanced, but he can only hold for so long because he’s a big guy,” Star opines. “So it’s definitely going to take him. Kyle definitely has a chance to compete in this game, and so does Shauhin. Due to the fact that Kyle is an athlete, he’s a lacrosse player, and so that means he knows all about balance.”
While Star is not high on Joe’s chances due to his size, she likes the prospects of the two most diminutive contestants for precisely the same reason. “Mary or Kamilla may be very good at this game due to the fact that they’re short people. So we basically just got to see how the game’s going to unfold.”

You might deduce that Star then believed she herself was at disadvantage due to her own sky-high height, but you would be wrong! “Of course, I have nothing but confidence in myself and hope that I will come up on top,” she reasons. “But at this point in the game, if you can’t come up on top, you got to come up on top in other elements like behind the scenes.”
Of course, much of that behind-the-scenes work cannot be done until after the challenge. “One way or another, something will be done today,” Star notes. “I don’t know what, but I hope the immunity necklace is on another neck outside of Joe, Eva, and Shauhin, and definitely outside of Kyle.”

Unfortunately for Star, her predictions did not exactly line up with the results, as big Joe emerged victorious in the challenge. And things then went from bad to worse when Star was then voted out later that night. But hey, at least we got two dope-ass rap songs out of it!
