Spring Bird Migration: A Season of Wonder in the Southern States
SHARE

The arrival of spring in the Southern states brings with it a vibrant display of bird life, as migratory species make their way through the region. With expert insights from wildlife ecologist Margaret Brittingham, this guide explores the must-see birds in every Southern state, from the Gulf Coast to the mountains.

As temperatures warm and days stretch longer, birds across the South grow noticeably more active. According to Margaret Brittingham, a wildlife ecologist and professor emerita at Pennsylvania State University, spring marks the most important season of the year for birds: breeding season.

“Birds are especially active and visible as they prepare for breeding,” Brittingham explained. “Males sing to attract mates and establish territories. Bird song is one of the sounds of spring.” This chorus is the cue to start looking up and exploring the rich bird life of the South.

Southern Backyard Favorites Are Stepping Into the Spotlight

As spring blooms, year-round residents in every Southern state are beginning their seasonal routines. Expect to see and hear more of the birds you may already recognize, such as the Carolina wren, Carolina chickadees, northern cardinals, and American robins.

Brittingham encouraged beginners to focus first on the birds they see every day. “Start with what’s common in your yard,” she advised. “Once you learn those, you’ll notice much more quickly when something new appears.” She recommends paying attention to body shape, bill size, coloring, and feeding behavior as simple ways to improve identification skills.

Gulf Coast States: Hummingbirds and Shorebirds Arrive First

In Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, migration often begins earlier than in other parts of the region. Hummingbirds typically appear along the Gulf Coast in early to mid-March, and coastal areas become prime viewing grounds for shorebirds stopping after crossing the Gulf.

Inland and Mountain States: Waterfowl, Raptors, and Warblers on the Move

From Georgia and the Carolinas to Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, spring migration unfolds in waves. Waterfowl such as buffleheads, mergansers, ring-necked ducks, and teal pass through on their way north, and visiting local lakes and reservoirs in late winter and early spring can offer impressive sightings.

By mid-February, raptors, including hawks and eagles, begin migrating north. Mountain ridges often act as ecological funnels, concentrating birds along their edges. By April, Neotropical migrants take center stage, with warblers, thrushes, tanagers, and orioles arriving in quick succession.

How Southern Landscapes Make a Difference

Brittingham highlighted the importance of native plants in supporting spring migrants. She recommends planting a diversity of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers to provide food and shelter. Oaks, dogwoods, serviceberry, viburnums, and American holly all offer valuable resources.

Adding a simple water source, such as a birdbath, can make a backyard even more inviting. A layered landscape of tall trees, mid-level shrubs, and ground cover creates safe feeding areas for both resident birds and travelers passing through.

A Season Worth Stepping Outside For

From hummingbirds along the Gulf Coast to warblers high in the treetops, spring transforms every Southern state into a living field guide. As Brittingham shared, the season offers one of the best opportunities to observe birds at their most active and visible.

Whether you travel to a coastal hotspot or simply step into your backyard at dawn, this is the time to listen for birdsong and scan the skies. In the South, spring does not just bloom – it takes flight.
