Shohei Ohtani’s exit from the World Baseball Classic embodies a shifting baseball landscape: Japan’s decade-long dominance is under threat as emerging powers like Venezuela capitalize on the absence of the sport’s brightest stars in peak form.

MIAMI — In a stunning reversal of fortune, Shohei Ohtani walked off the field at loanDepot park as a defeated champion, his final at-bat a popout that sealed Japan’s 8-5 quarterfinal loss to Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic Associated Press. Three years ago, the same stage saw Ohtani strike out Mike Trout to clinch Japan’s second consecutive title, a moment of pure triumph Associated Press. This time, the final out symbolized the end of an era.

Japan arrived in Miami as the tournament’s gold standard, boasting an 11-game WBC winning streak and titles in both 2006 and 2009. The Samurai Warriors had never missed the semifinals and had added Olympic gold in 2020 (held in 2021) by defeating the United States Associated Press, further cementing their international supremacy.

The game itself was a rollercoaster. Venezuela struck first when Ronald Acuña Jr. homered off starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the first inning. Ohtani answered immediately, crushing a solo shot of his own off Ranger Suárez. After Seiya Suzuki was injured sliding into second, replacement Shota Morishita launched a three-run homer in the third to give Japan a 5-2 lead. It looked like a march to the semifinals.

But the Venezuelans rallied. In the fifth, Maikel Garcia took Chihiro Sumida deep for a two-run homer, igniting the dugout. Then in the sixth, Wilyer Abreu crushed a three-run drive off Hiromi Itoh to put Venezuela ahead 7-5 Associated Press. An errant pickoff throw by Atsuki Taneichi in the eighth added another run, completing the comeback.

Ohtani, limited to hitting due to precaution with his surgically repaired elbow, went 1-for-4 with a home run but struck out in his final three plate appearances, including the game-ending popup. He finished the tournament batting .462 with three homers and seven RBIs, yet Japan’s overall offensive production (.284 average) and pitching (3.35 ERA) regressed from their 2023 heights.

Manager Hirokazu Ibata acknowledged the missing piece: “We didn’t have an option for Ohtani to pitch from the middle of the game. Of course, I would have wanted him, but I didn’t have a choice.” The absence of Dodgers phenom Roki Sasaki, who stayed with Los Angeles for spring training, left Japan’s rotation thinner. Without Ohtani on the mound, the team’s strategic flexibility evaporated.

This loss signals more than a single tournament defeat. It exposes the narrowing gap between baseball’s traditional powers and a wave of talent-rich nations. Japan’s golden generation, led by the sport’s biggest star, may be past its peak as the rest of the world catches up.

The echoes of 2023 are unmistakable. Ohtani’s 2023 strikeout of Trout was a coronation; his 2026 popout is a passing of the torch. Whether this marks the end of Japan’s WBC dynasty or merely a setback will be debated for years. But one thing is clear: the era of automatic Japanese titles is over, and the World Baseball Classic has never been more wide open.
