Defensive Mastery Lifts Purdue Over Michigan in Big Ten Triumph

Purdue erased a mid‑season slide with a dominant four‑day run, culminating in an 80‑72 victory over Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament final. Oscar Cluff’s 21 points, Trey Kaufman‑Renn’s 20, and Braden Smith’s near‑record playmaking sparked a second‑half defensive stand that sealed the program’s first tourney title since 2023.

CHICAGO — The No. 18 Boilermakers captured the Big Ten Tournament crown with an 80‑72 win over No. 3 Michigan on Sunday at the United Center. This marks Purdue’s first conference tournament championship since 2023 and only the third in school history.

The victory completes a dramatic reversal. After dropping four of their final six regular‑season games, Matt Painter’s squad won four games in four days, a run powered by a defensive transformation. “We’re not here and celebrating this tournament championship if we didn’t play better defense the last four days,” Painter declared. “Our guys are doing great. We’re playing well at the right time.”

Offensively, the Boilermakers relied on a balanced attack. Center Oscar Cluff poured in 21 points, while forward Trey Kaufman‑Renn added 20. Senior point guard Braden Smith contributed 14 points, 11 assists, and three steals. Fletcher Loyer chipped in 14 points, hitting three 3‑pointers.

Purdue’s defense held the Wolverines to just 34 points in the second half. The Boilermakers shot 15 for 26 after the break and opened the half with nine of their first eleven attempts. “We just clicked,” Smith said of the pick‑and‑roll with Kaufman‑Renn. “Obviously he trusts me to get it to him, and I trust him to catch it and then obviously go make a play or make passes or score out of it.”

That pick‑and‑roll partnership reached a critical moment early in the second half. Smith fired a perfect pass to Kaufman‑Renn for two consecutive jump shots, stretching Purdue’s lead to 55‑44. Minutes later, Smith drove into the lane, drew a foul on the 7‑foot‑3 Aday Mara, and converted the three‑point play, sending the Purdue faithful into a frenzy. He followed with a free throw to make it 58‑46. “I thought Braden never wore down,” Michigan coach Dusty May said. “Obviously you could tell he was fatigued, but it didn’t faze him. He just has that much mental strength and capacity.”

Smith’s night was even more remarkable considering he changed numbers at halftime. After ripping his No. 3 jersey in frustration early in the game, he emerged for the second half wearing No. 41 and promptly orchestrated the decisive run.

Cluff faced early foul trouble but stayed disciplined. “It was just like staying focused, making sure I got my hands out of there and wasn’t doing anything stupid or silly that you could pick up a random foul,” he explained. He played 12 minutes after the break without further incident.

The win adds another chapter to a rivalry that has lately belonged to Michigan. The Wolverines had beaten Purdue in the 1998 and 2018 Big Ten finals and also prevailed in the regular‑season finale, 91‑80 on Feb. 17 in Ann Arbor. That loss sparked questions about Purdue’s March mettle; the Boilermakers answered with authority.

Braden Smith’s performance also placed him on the doorstep of NCAA history. With 1,075 career assists, he sits one shy of Bobby Hurley’s NCAA record. That milestone could fall in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Michigan (31‑3) entered the game as the top seed in the Big Ten and the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Region. Despite the setback, the Wolverines will begin their March run in the First Four before facing the UMBC‑Howard winner on Thursday. “We know the month that we have ahead,” said Aday Mara, who posted 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. “We’ve just got to be ready, be better, and feel this right now because it doesn’t feel good, and use it to be better in the tournament.”

The outcome also solidifies Purdue (27‑8) as a No. 2 seed in the West Region of the NCAA Tournament, where they will meet Queens on Friday. The Boilermakers have earned a top‑four seed in nine consecutive tournaments.

For fans, the victory feels like vindication after a rocky close to the regular season. The Boilermakers’ four‑day sprint in Chicago has reminded the nation that Purdue’s blend of veteran poise and aggressive defense remains a formidable force in March.
