The Pitino Bowl: More Than a Game as No. 22 St. John’s Faces the Ghost of Its Coach’s Past

This Saturday’s showdown between No. 22 St. John’s and Iona is far more than a non-conference game; it’s a battle of identity and legacy. For Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, it’s a direct confrontation with the successful program he resurrected. For the Red Storm, it’s a critical test of whether their newfound defensive grit can contain the high-octane offense installed by their own leader.

When the schedule was made, it was circled in red. Not just a game, but a story. On Saturday, Rick Pitino will stand on the home sideline and watch as the team he led back to national relevance, the Iona Gaels, attempts to take down his new powerhouse, the No. 22 ranked St. John’s Red Storm. This is the definition of a legacy game, packed with emotion, strategy, and a fascinating clash of styles.

Before taking the reins in Queens and igniting a fire under a dormant St. John’s program, Pitino’s return to college basketball was a masterclass in program building at Iona. Over three seasons, he compiled an impressive 64-22 record and guided the Gaels to two NCAA Tournament appearances, re-establishing them as a dominant mid-major force [Field Level Media]. The affection remains, but the competition is real.

“I have tremendous affection for Iona, and I told them: ‘I’d love to play you,'” Pitino said Thursday. “I’m hoping that the crowd is amazing so we can make it like a holiday game every year.”

St. John’s Search for an Identity

The Red Storm (5-3) entered the season with sky-high expectations, rocketing to No. 5 in the AP preseason poll. However, losses to formidable opponents like Alabama, Iowa State, and Auburn exposed a defensive vulnerability, forcing a moment of reckoning. The team that scored with ease was also giving up points in bunches.

That narrative was flipped on its head in their most recent outing, a gritty 63-58 victory over Ole Miss on December 6. In a dramatic reversal, the offense sputtered, shooting a meager 34%. But the defense was ferocious, holding the Rebels to just 36.4% shooting. It was a statement win that signaled a potential philosophical shift for a team searching for what will define them in March.

The Ejiofor Effect on Defense

The anchor of that defensive masterpiece was forward Zuby Ejiofor. While he was the only Red Storm player in double figures with 15 points, his true impact was felt on the other end of the floor. Ejiofor recorded a stunning eight blocked shots, joining an elite group of St. John’s defenders that includes Tariq Owens and Sir’Dominic Pointer as the only players in school history to reach that mark in a single game.

“We’re getting better,” Pitino stated, acknowledging the defensive growth. “(The win over Ole Miss) was two teams playing great defense, but that was by far our best defensive performance of the season.”

Ejiofor echoed the sentiment of a team still finding its way. “This is not how we really wanted to start off, but it’s a work in progress,” he said. “All we could control is the now and moving forward.”

A Starting Lineup Shakeup

Never one to stand still, Pitino is making adjustments. He announced that freshman guard Ian Jackson will be moved into the starting lineup for the Iona game, replacing Dylan Darling. Jackson, who is averaging 11.4 points per game, came off the bench in the last seven contests. The move signals Pitino is still experimenting to find the most potent combination and reward players who are earning bigger roles.

“I think he deserves to have a chance to start,” Pitino explained. “Starting to me is not meaningful, but starting to them is very meaningful and he deserves that opportunity.”

Don’t Sleep on the Gaels

Iona (8-3) is not coming to Queens to be a sentimental footnote. The Gaels are a dangerous and well-coached team, leading the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in scoring with an explosive 81.7 points per game. They are more than capable of punishing any defensive lapses from the Red Storm.

In a mirror image of St. John’s last game, Iona recently secured a tough 69-63 win over Bryant by flexing its own defensive muscle. The Gaels held the Bulldogs to 39.3% shooting and forced 17 turnovers, proving they can win a grind-it-out game as well as a shootout.

The offense is led by a quartet of double-digit scorers, spearheaded by Cincinnati transfer CJ Anthony, whose 16 points per game rank third in the MAAC. He is complemented by Lamin Sabally (12.9 ppg), Toby Harris (11.5 ppg), and Kosy Akametu (10.3 ppg), giving them balanced and potent firepower.

The Final Analysis: A Battle of Wills

This game is a fascinating crossroads. Will St. John’s continue to embrace the tough, defensive-minded identity that secured their win over Ole Miss? Or will Iona’s high-powered offense pull them back into the type of track meet that defined their early-season struggles? For Pitino, it’s a test of his new team’s discipline against a system he knows better than anyone. For the fans, it’s a compelling chapter in the career of a coaching legend and a preview of what both these programs hope to become.
