Fortress Lubbock Stands: Texas Tech Grinds Out 76-72 Win, Pushing Non-Conference Home Streak to 44

In a game far closer than anyone anticipated, JT Toppin’s 27 points and clutch late-game scoring were just enough for No. 20 Texas Tech to fend off a relentless Wyoming team 76-72. The hard-fought victory preserves one of college basketball’s most impressive active non-conference home winning streaks, now standing at 44 consecutive games.

LUBBOCK, Texas – It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t easy, but the streak lives on. The No. 20 Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-2) were pushed to the absolute limit by the Wyoming Cowboys (6-2) on Sunday, ultimately securing a tense 76-72 victory that extends their non-conference home winning streak to a remarkable 44 games. While the win goes in the books, the real story was the resilience required to earn it and the star power that shone through when the pressure was highest.

In a contest that featured eight ties and seven lead changes, this was a far cry from the 96-49 blowout the Red Raiders delivered to the Cowboys in Lubbock just last season. This time, Wyoming came to fight, and for long stretches, they controlled the game’s tempo.

The Toppin Takeover

When the Red Raiders needed a leader, junior forward JT Toppin answered the call emphatically. Pouring in 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds, Toppin was the undeniable difference-maker. His performance was a validation of the high expectations that followed him into the season, as he was named a preseason AP All-America.

Toppin was most dominant when it mattered most. After Wyoming took a 56-55 lead with 7:38 remaining, he immediately scored on consecutive possessions—a tough putback layup followed by a fastbreak finish—to snatch the lead back for good. He scored 10 of his 27 points in that crucial closing stretch, single-handedly keeping the Cowboys at bay and securing the win.

Alongside Toppin, LeJuan Watts provided a critical secondary scoring punch with 19 points, while Christian Anderson chipped in with 15.

A Streak of Historical Significance

The 44-game non-conference home winning streak isn’t just a number; it places Texas Tech in elite company. It is one of the longest active streaks in all of NCAA Division I men’s basketball, a testament to the fortress they have built at United Supermarkets Arena. The last time the Red Raiders fell to a non-conference opponent at home was a memorable overtime battle against No. 15 Kentucky way back in January 2020.

This sustained dominance is a core part of the program’s identity. Under third-year coach Grant McCasland, the standard has been maintained perfectly; he is now 21-0 in non-conference home games at the helm. The win keeps the Red Raiders in pursuit of the nation’s longest active streaks, trailing only Auburn (67) and fellow Big 12 power Baylor (47).

Wyoming’s Valiant Effort

While Texas Tech celebrates the win, Wyoming deserves immense credit for their performance. Led by a spectacular 28-point outburst from guard Leland Walker, the Cowboys showed they are a vastly improved team. Walker was the only Cowboy to score in double figures, relentlessly attacking the Red Raider defense and hitting a massive three-pointer to cut the deficit to 75-72 with just 8.8 seconds left.

Wyoming’s Leland Walker (5) had a game-high 28 points, nearly leading his team to a monumental upset in Lubbock.

The Red Raiders themselves went through a brutal cold spell, going more than seven and a half minutes without a field goal spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second. That offensive drought allowed Wyoming to erase a 10-point deficit and turn the game into a nail-biter.

What’s Next for Both Programs

With this test behind them, the Red Raiders, a top team in the AP Top 25, now look ahead to a neutral-site matchup against LSU next Sunday at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. This will be another key opportunity to build their resume before the gauntlet of Big 12 conference play begins.

Wyoming will return home to host Dartmouth College on Saturday, looking to build on the confidence gained from pushing a top-20 team to the brink on their home floor.
