Key points

  • Spike Lee says he and Timothée Chalamet are “gonna work together” on a movie at some point.

  • The filmmaker said the project will “have nothing to do with sports.”

  • Lee also said he and Chalamet feel “no competition” as two of the New York Knicks’ most prominent fans.

From Madison Square Garden to the silver screen?

Spike Lee discussed his relationship with fellow New York Knicks superfan Timothée Chalamet during a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, and said he intends to work with the Call Me By Your Name star in the near future.

“He’s a great actor, and one day we’re gonna work together,” Lee said of Chalamet. “He’s a good guy. He’s a real fan, he’s a great actor, and we’ve talked about doing a film together once his schedule clears up [in] the next four, five years.”

When host Bill Simmons suggested that the duo’s collaboration could incorporate their shared love for one of the NBA’s iconic teams, Lee responded, “It’s gonna have nothing to do with sports” — suggesting he might already have a concept in mind for his potential Chalamet collab.

The filmmaker is the preeminent celebrity Knicks fan of his generation, and has recently been spotted in close proximity to Chalamet while courtside at many of the team’s home games. During his conversation with Simmons, Lee clarified that there are no hard feelings between him and the Dune actor.

“People are trying to start stuff with me and him. Me and him are good, man,” Lee said. “My daughter and my son [and Chalamet], they all grew up together in New York City. We wanna do a film together! It’s no competition at all. Look, there’s no rivalry there.”

Lee’s estimation of Chalamet’s availability may prove to be correct, as the actor has several sizable projects in the works. The Little Women actor will next appear in Marty Supreme, a table tennis dramedy from Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems) that also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler Okonma (a.k.a. Tyler, the Creator), Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher. That film is set to release on Christmas this year, and may position Chalamet for another lengthy awards season press circuit a la A Complete Unknown.

Chalamet is also returning as Paul Atreides for Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune film, which began production last month. The sci-fi sequel is expected to release in theaters in December 2026.

Additionally, Deadline Hollywood reported last week that the actor will reteam with A Complete Unknown filmmaker James Mangold for High Side, a heist thriller that will see Chalamet play a motorcyclist who turns to a life of crime.

And last year, Wonka director Paul King confirmed that he was in the early stages of developing a sequel to the Roald Dahl fantasy-musical, which would presumably see Chalamet return as the titular chocolatier.

Lee’s latest feature, Highest 2 Lowest, is now playing in select theaters.
