NEED TO KNOW

  • A man has been helping pay his parents’ mortgage for four years

  • Given his financial contributions, he asked to be put on the deed

  • However, his parents called him ‘”entitled” and accused him of trying to “steal” the house

A man’s parents called him “entitled” for asking to be named on the deed of their house, which he has helped pay for over the last few years.

On Reddit, the man shares that his parents bought a house 10 years ago and later ran into “some financial issues.”

“Long story short, they were behind on their mortgage and were close to losing the house,” he writes.

Around the same time, he landed a “stable job” and “stepped in and started helping with the payments.”

“At first I told myself it would just be for a few months. That turned into a year,” he continues. “And now, it’s been almost four years of me sending money every month to keep them afloat. I don’t live in the house. I never have.”

While renting his own place, he’s been helping his parents pay down their house. But, recently, he told them he was going to start cutting back on the payments, as things were getting more expensive and he wanted to start saving for a place of his own.

However, his parents asked him to help out for a “little longer” because they “couldn’t handle it on their own.”

The man told them that if he was going to keep paying for the house, he wanted his name on it. “I didn’t say I wanted to sell it or kick them out or anything just that I’d feel better having some kind of legal tie to something I’ve been financially responsible for,” the man explains.

His request made his parents “really upset.” His mom accused him of “trying to steal the house” and his dad said that he was acting “entitled.”

The man insists that he just “wants to protect” himself in case something happens.

“I feel bad because I do want to help them but at the same time, I’m 29 and spending hundreds a month on something I don’t even benefit from,” he concludes, asking if he is wrong.

People in the comments were firmly on his side, noting that he should either get his name on the deed or stop paying completely.

“It is really unreasonable for you to be paying off someone else’s mortgage when you haven’t been able to save to get your own place. Four years is too long,” one person commented.

“Please draft up a ledger showing the dates and amounts you have sent in for the mortgage. Are you paying it directly to the bank? Or are you sending it to your parents for them to put towards the mortgage? At this point, you have given them notice. You can cut them off now. The only people acting entitled here are your parents,” another person commented.
