Simon Edvinsson’s Blueprint to End Detroit Red Wings’ Playoff Drought

After another disappointing season, Red Wings star Simon Edvinsson points to a lack of physicality and net-front grit as the primary reason for Detroit’s playoff failures, and he’s demanding a cultural shift to end a decade-long drought.

The frustration is palpable. For the 10th consecutive season, the Detroit Red Wings are watching the playoffs from the outside, and their young cornerstone, defenseman Simon Edvinsson, is fed up with the same old explanations.

Edvinsson, just 23, has become the vocal conscience of a franchise mired in the longest active playoff drought in the NHL. His message after this season’s collapse is stark and specific: the Red Wings must get tougher, meaner, and more physical around the net if they ever hope to break through.

This isn’t just about effort; it’s about identity. Edvinsson explicitly named the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers as models—teams that make opponents suffer for every inch of ice, especially in the dirty areas around the crease.

“Pittsburgh, you see and feel it out there on the ice,” Edvinsson said, as reported by The Detroit News. “They’re very hard to play against. They crash the net all the time, they hit even after you pass the puck. That’s a championship mentality.”

He argues that goals in the modern NHL come from chaos and persistence, not just highlight-reel skill. “It’s not going to be pretty,” Edvinsson admitted. “It’s going to be those gritty goals where you send the puck to the net and basically crash the net and crash into the goal into the paint.”

The irony is that the Red Wings spent much of the 2025-26 season looking like a playoff team. They flirted with the Eastern Conference’s best record through January and February, building confidence with a fast, skilled style. But as injuries mounted and the schedule tightened, their lack of physical depth and net-front resolve was exposed.

Edvinsson, who missed only 10 games despite undergoing two knee surgeries during the season, was a statistical outlier. He posted career highs with nine goals and 25 points in 72 games, while averaging a colossal 22 minutes and 21 seconds of ice time per game. His partnership with Moritz Seider formed one of the NHL’s most durable and effective defensive pairings, ranking third in the league in ice time and top five in fewest goals against per The Detroit News.

Edvinsson’s resilience is remarkable. The first knee procedure sidelined him through training camp, and the second came just before the Olympic break. Yet he played through the pain, acknowledging that “nobody plays at 100%” in an 82-game season, which will expand to 84 next year. “Having two surgeries during one season is not optimal,” he said, “but I felt good enough to play, and that’s what I did.”

His on-ice evolution is directly tied to Seider, whom Edvinsson calls “one of the best defensemen in the league, probably even in the top five or three.” The synergy was immediate. “I felt we kind of found each other from the first time we played with each other,” Edvinsson noted. “It’s been good for my growth and to watch and learn from him.”

This synergy, however, highlights a larger organizational dilemma. The Red Wings have built a promising young core around Edvinsson and Seider, but their style remains too finesse-oriented for deep playoff runs. Edvinsson’s call for more “championship mentality” hockey is a direct critique of the team’s current construction.

Fan forums and social media are buzzing with agreement. For years, Detroit fans have lamented the team’s softness in high-stakes games. Edvinsson’s public stance validates those frustrations and adds pressure on management to acquire or develop more physically imposing forwards and defensemen.

The offseason now brings a critical parallel track: Edvinsson is a restricted free agent, due for a significant raise from his $875,000 entry-level deal. His desire to stay in Detroit is clear—”It would be an honor,” he said—but the length and value of his next contract will signal the organization’s commitment to building around his gritty vision.

Will the Red Wings invest long-term in a player who embodies the change they need? Or will they lowball him, risking his patience and potentially his future with the team? Negotiations will be a telling indicator of front-office priorities.

Edvinsson’s prescription isn’t revolutionary; it’s a return to the Red Wings’ roots of hard-nosed hockey. But in an era of speed and skill, it requires a conscious roster shift. The blueprint is simple: more crashes, more hits after the whistle, more willingness to absorb pain for a loose puck.

For a franchise that hasn’t tasted postseason hockey since 2016, the time for talk is over. Edvinsson has laid down the challenge. The question is whether the Red Wings’ leadership and roster have the stomach for the fight he demands.
