Ted McGinley reveals he was nervous about Derek’s fate in ‘Shrinking’ season 3 after his character faced a life-threatening heart condition. The actor shares his experience filming the intense storyline and the inspiration behind Derek’s accidental stoner moment.

Why McGinley Thought Derek Was Getting Killed Off

Ted McGinley has been enjoying a more prominent role in Shrinking season 3, but the increased screen time came with a cost: genuine worry about his character’s survival. In episode 6, titled “Dereks Don’t Die,” Derek faces a life-threatening heart condition that requires emergency bypass surgery. The intense storyline left McGinley feeling uneasy about Derek’s fate, especially since he typically doesn’t know what’s coming in the scripts.

“I mean, I literally had some sleepless nights,” McGinley tells PEOPLE about reading the scripts for this season. “I don’t get to see [the story] ahead of time. I have no idea where it’s gonna go. So, it’s week to week.”

The actor’s anxiety was justified. In the episode, Derek discovers a heart blockage that could lead to a “widow maker” heart attack. As he prepares for surgery, he shares a heartfelt moment with his wife, Liz (Christa Miller), listing instructions for things to take care of at home and expressing his love. The emotional scene culminates in Derek’s successful surgery, but the journey was a rollercoaster for McGinley.

The Inspiration Behind Derek’s Stoner Moment

While Derek’s heart condition was a major storyline, McGinley also highlighted another standout moment from season 3: Derek accidentally getting stoned. This humorous yet challenging scene was inspired by showrunner Bill Lawrence’s real-life experience with his son.

“I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is so good,'” McGinley says of the scene. “Are you kidding me? Like, those are the kind of things you dream about.” However, the actor admits it was one of the most challenging things he’s ever done. “And yet I was so nervous because that’s actually a Bill Lawrence story. That really happened to Bill… I will say it was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done as an actor.”

The Impact of McGinley’s Performance

McGinley’s performance in season 3 has been a highlight for fans of Shrinking. His portrayal of Derek’s vulnerability and humor has added depth to the character, making him a fan favorite. The actor’s ability to balance comedy and drama has been praised, particularly in the heart condition storyline and the stoner moment.

The season’s emotional rollercoaster has resonated with audiences, and McGinley’s candid interview with PEOPLE offers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and rewards of bringing Derek to life. His dedication to the role and his willingness to embrace both the comedic and dramatic elements have contributed significantly to the show’s success.

What’s Next for Derek and ‘Shrinking’

As ‘Shrinking’ season 3 continues, fans are eager to see what’s next for Derek. The heart condition storyline has opened up new possibilities for his character, and McGinley’s performance has set a high bar for future episodes. The show’s blend of comedy and drama has been a hit with audiences, and the season’s emotional depth has been a standout feature.

New episodes of ‘Shrinking’ season 3 debut Wednesdays until April 8 on Apple TV.
