“Shōgun” is officially coming back for Season 2 at FX, with the second season of the hit historical drama set to begin production in January 2026 in Vancouver.
Season 1 stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will return in the roles of Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, respectively. Sanada, who was a producer on Season 1 in addition to starring, has been elevated to executive producer. Jarvis will now be a co-executive producer on the series.

The second season will take place 10 years after the events of the first.
“Shōgun” Season 1 was based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, which was itself loosely based on real events in Japanese history. The show debuted to near universal acclaim in February 2024.
Then in May, it was reported that a second season was being eyed by FX following the success of Season 1. Sources said that FX was mulling entering the show into the drama series category for the Emmys rather than limited series, which would only be the case if another season was coming. Not long after, it was confirmed that Sanada had signed a deal to return for a second season, with FX then officially confirming that the James Clavell estate and series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks were working to develop two more seasons. Kondo and Marks recently wrapped the writers’ room for the second season.
Kondo and Marks serve as executive producers alongside Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell and Michael De Luca. As mentioned above, Sanada is also an executive producer and Jarvis is a co-executive producer. FX Productions is the studio.
Per FX, “Shōgun” was the most-watched program in the network’s history. It won a record 18 Emmy Awards in 2024, including best drama series, best actor in a drama for Sanada, and best actress in a drama for Anna Sawai. The show has won a raft more awards since, including the Golden Globe for best drama series.
Per the official logline of Season 1, “Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.”
