The 2025 Met Gala would not be complete without a glowing and glamorous Serena Williams.
On the first Monday of May, the Met Gala veteran graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City wearing a Moncler ensemble that showed a sliver of skin.
The athlete’s look featured a silky sea foam gown with a sheer lace panel snaking down from her hip to the floor, complementing the sexy off-the-shoulder sleeves and cowl neck on top. Her dress was paired with a long quilted puffer cape reminiscent of the brand’s luxury outerwear.

Fred Leighton jewels were her bling of choice, specifically the jewelers selection of vintage diamonds. Per the brand, Williams wore 1960s diamond wing earrings featuring 6-carat pear-shaped drops, a 1950s diamond-and-platinum swirl brooch in her wavy honey blonde pixie cut (which was also a dramatic reveal of the night) and a 1940s pinky ring with a 5-carat stone. A French-cut diamond and platinum bracelet adorned her wrist.
Williams showed some love for her look on Instagram, writing: “For every dandy, there’s a gown,” in reference to tonight’s Dandyism-inspired theme.

In October 2024, Vogue shared details on the 2025 Met Gala, announcing that Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour would be co-chairs for the event, alongside LeBron James as honorary chair. The gala, which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on the first Monday in May, is a fundraiser for The Costume Institute and spotlights the museum’s spring 2025 exhibition, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” the theme for the gala.
Curator in Charge Andrew Bolton said that the exhibit, which is inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, explores “the Black dandy as both a concept and an identity signifier.”
The exhibit “presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style from the 18th century to the present through an exploration of the concept of dandyism,” according to a post on the museum’s Instagram.
The Met Gala’s dress code for this year is “Tailored for You,” a nod to the exhibition’s focus on menswear and suiting. This year’s event also has a star-studded host committee that includes Simone Biles and her husband, Jonathan Owens, Doechii, Regina King, Spike Lee, Usher and Angel Reese.

Last year, Williams attended fashion’s biggest night wearing a metallic gold gown by Balenciaga.
The one-shoulder look was complemented with various accessories, including Messika jewels, black opera-length gloves, black sheer tights and matching heels. In her hair, Williams wore golden flowers.
Vogue reported that Williams collaborated with Balenciaga on the dress specifically inspired by a look from its 51st couture collection, shown in 2022, and drawing inspiration from the brand’s archives.
“The atelier dedicated 150 hours to pattern-making and crafted the couture piece from 25 meters of gold foil-laminated taffeta sourced from Italy,” the outlet said.

In a statement to Vogue, Williams said that the gown represented “a collective effort to create something truly extraordinary, and I am immensely proud to be the one to showcase it.”
The 2023 Met Gala was also a memorable one for Williams, as it was where she revealed her baby bump.
Right before hitting the red carpet in a black Gucci gown with a white train and cuffs and pearl jewelry by Tiffany & Co, Williams announced that she was expecting her second baby.
Williams gave birth to her and husband Alexis Ohanian’s younger daughter, Adira River Ohanian, in August 2023. The two are also parents to Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., whom they welcomed in September 2017.

As a regular attendee of the Met Gala, Williams was previously tapped to serve as a co-chair in 2019, alongside Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. That year she attended wearing a custom neon yellow strong-shouldered Versace gown with sporty matching yellow sneakers from Virgil Abloh.
While Williams has been a red carpet all-star, she recently opened up to PEOPLE about why she believes inner beauty is essential.

“I feel early on my parents always taught me that ‘you are beautiful’ and ‘you are gorgeous,’ and I kind of just always lived with that,” she told PEOPLE in April. “I think inner beauty is super important, and that it’s more important than anything else.”
