Selena Gomez Wants To Do a ‘Taylor’s Version’ of This Song From Her Past originally appeared on Parade.
Just like her BFFTaylor Swift, Selena Gomezhas had her many “eras.” She was a Disney Channel original, starring in Wizards of Waverly Place. She was a pop sensation leading the band, Selena Gomez & the Scene, before breaking out as a beloved solo artist. And she’s an Emmy-nominated actress for her part in Only Murders in the Building.
And like her BFF, Gomez, 33, has considered possibly re-recording some of her past songs. Swift famously re-recorded her music when she was unable to purchase the master recordings, resulting in the “Taylor’s Version” of Red, Speak Now, 1989, and her self-titled debut album. And it seems that fans might soon see a “Selena’s Version,” too.
When speaking on the Aug. 6 episode of the Therapuss podcast, Gomez recounted her time in Selena Gomez & The Scene, the group she formed in 2008 along with Drew Taubenfeld, Joey Clement, Dane Forrest and Greg Garman.
The band released three albums: 2009’s Kiss & Tell, 2010’s A Year Without Rain, and 2011’s When The Sun Goes Down, the latter of which included the single, “Who Says.”
Gomez said on Therapuss that “Who Says” is her favorite song from her time with The Scene. “It’s the most powerful moment when I get to perform it,” she said, Gomez, who has taken a hiatus from performing to focus on her acting career.
Selena said that, “honestly, the only reason I would ever do a tour again” is if she could perform “Who Says.”
Selena last hit the road in 2016, and she acknowledged that she’s a bit rusty. She’d need to “take it down an octave from each year I’ve sang it,” and that she was open to re-recording a new version.
“I need to redo it,” she said. “I should recut it.”
Gomez revealed she recently heard the song on the radio while on a trip overseas. “I was like, ‘Why the [explicative] am I tearing up to my own song?'” remarked Selena. “But it was because it was the little me who was there saying these really powerful messages that I still need to hear.”
Gomez’s last solo album was 2020’s Rare. In May, Selena and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, released a joint album, I Said I Love You First.
